Greenwich Village is the LEGO city that I built in 2002, inspired by the clutter and bustle of the historic districts of New York City. Also, watch a time-lapse animation of the city being built.
About this creation
Here are some pictures of the whole city. The whole thing took about 6 months to build, from July to December of 2002. Be sure to check out the closeups of the city life.
Also check out this time-lapse animtion of the city being built. It is a 1MB animated GIF. There is also a larger version . (3.7MB)
I also have a folder full of pictures and descriptions of each building .
About the city: Playing with scale
When building The Village, I bent the "standard" scale a lot, learning from what Walt Disney Co. has done in their theme parks. In Disney World, the areas where people walk (such as shops and things) are all built normally, but all the upper floors are at a smaller scale... 3/4, I think. You would think it would add "forced perspective" and make the buildings feel bigger, but it actually gives them more of a "quaint" feeling, which is exactly why they do it.
I did the same thing in Greenwich Village. The upper floors are not big enough for a minifig to stand, but it doesn't matter.
About the real Greenwich Village
My model isn't a "copy" of any particular place, or of any specific buildings; I just wanted to imitate the atmosphere of this part of Manhattan. For those of you that don't know New York, large parts of "The Village" are designated as Historic Districts.... most of the buildings are from the late 1800 and early 1900s, are small, and have a lot of character. There are no skyscrapers. This part of the city is always bustling because it has hundreds of places to eat, an active night life, and many charming narrow streets serviced by wide, busy avenues.

Another angle of the completed Greenwich Village. The large, blank, white building had a large advertisement on the side at one point.

No, Greenwich Village is the name of a neighborhood in Manhattan, New York City. BUT, If you're talking about Greenwich and Bedford Connecticut, then I'll actually be doing an event nearby in October. I'll post more information about it soon. (And if you're talking about Greenwich and Bedford England, sorry, I'm not even close.) :) |

This has been my favorite LEGO creation of all time, so I finally decided to comment/rate. A beautiful city that captures the feel of New York perfectly (though I don't know NY as well as you). The details are incredibly well done and add so much more to the creation. The city truly feels alive, something I've seen in very few works of art, let alone just LEGO. |
