1209 AD. The two signal towers of Geldermalsen float high above the clouds. It's the perfect defence against bands of people trying to quench the flames telling the king everything is alright in this quarter of his kingdom. Legend has it that once the flames are extinguished, the kingdom will crumble and perish.

It is unknown whether the Rock Tower is just a very high tower that cuts through the clouds, or is actually floating, like the Mage's Obsidian Tower certainly is. Either way, the effect is the same though: the lowest entrance can only be reached by birds.

Despite the obvious defense of being higher up than any arrow could fly from the ground, the Rock Tower also sports some dashing merlons. Guards can walk around the tower in what must be the most tedious guarding job in the whole kingdom.

The King's Holy Fire. Although it's function is mostly ceremonial, its blazing light does function as a signal to the other quarters of the kingdom that everything is hunky dory here.

While soldiers stand guard in the way that soldiers that feel they don't have much to stand guard against stand guard, a horse of the extremely rare pegasii race is being saddled up at the gate. You didn't think all the soldiers flew up there by themselves, did you?

A low shot of the Rock Tower.

The bridge between the two towers is half made of regular stone, half obsidian. It symbolizes the joining of the king's realm with the magic realm.

Bowmen on the Rock Tower's battlement. While the guarding of the towers is highly ceremonial, it is also a job of great standing. Soldiers that have fought well in battles past get rewarded this position by the king as a means of gratitude.

Some more honour guards. Nothing much to do than to polish that helmet some more.

The Mage's Obsidian Tower stands on a tiny piece of floating land. A mage's personal Doombringer guard is enjoying this tiny fleck of nature in this world of stone and clouds.

It's really a nice bit of nature, as nature goes. Makes you forget you have a severe case of high anxiety for a few minutes.

The Obsidian Tower in all its overpowering glory. Rather sleek stuff. Impossible to climb or cut with a sword or axe.

The Mage of Geldermalsen doing his daily incantations to keep the towers afloat in the air. He is here accompanied by a couple of his personal Doombringer guards ('If we fail to deliver your doom within 30 minutes, it's free!').

Top of the tower, with its magical Spirit Fire. The Spirit Fire is even harder to quench, but once this is done, legend has it that the end of the world has come.

Another shot of the Spirit Fire. I think those obsidian bats are a nice touch. That old wizard knows how to create an atmosphere of magic and might!

The pegasii horse is being fueled up for a trip to the ground.

But wait, what's that? It's an attack! Some unknown knight is trying to extinguish the fire! Shoot him!

There's more of them! And they're all flying on some kind of magical flying horse.

Quickly! Guards! Get them away from the fire.

These flying horses are nothing like the pegasii horse we know and love. These ones are much more agile, it seems. They have little difficulty dodging our arrows. I suspect another wizard may be behind all this.

Come, my brave soldiers!

Then three of them attacked at once in a flurry of wings. The poor guards could only barely counter their attack.

One of the flying knights rounded the bridge in an act of defiance. The Doombringer guards sputtered with impotent rage.

Oh no! And now they have backup too. It's a Twin Steed Cloud Cart, and it's full of people with pointy bits.

Fly, my pretties! Let's take out those dumb guards.

The whole of the scene. Complete.
I will leave it to your imaginations what happens next. I will now show you some more detail shots and shots of the tower interior.

The Twin Steed Cloud Cart from below.

Flyover with one of the attacking knights. WOOSH!

Close up of the Twin Steed Cloud Cart. It's a bit cramped, but it does carry six minifigs in the back. All armed and dangerous. And the cart has wooden merlons!

Crew of the Twin Steed Cloud Cart.

In the White Room inside the Rock Tower, two obligatory princesses are bickering over breakfast.

Oh dear. The Knight of Geldermalsen is still busy putting on his battle gear inside the armory.

In one of the dungeons, three brave soldiers encounter a slight lingering soul problem.
'Don't cross the swords!'

'No, I didn't get that thing in here! I don't even know what that is!'

A group shot of the flying marauders.

The mage and his Doombringers.

The Knight of Geldermalsen and his men.

Construction of the Twin Steed Cloud Cart.

The tower taken apart to show the different rooms. They are really in there.

'Stumpy.' The tower with two of its floors missing.

Ima shoot yo' fire!
Hope you liked it!
Note: I've left all the transparent supports where they are, in order to show that all the flying horses are not photoshopped in. Also, the Mage's Tower really stands like that on my table. Quite stable too, if you would forgive my equine comment.

So much lovely details ! Honestly, to my knowledge, amongst the "space builders" you're one of the best to do other subjects with the same high-level quality. Too bad that you meet Dave Kaleta in Round 4, it means that one of you won't do the Olympics until the end - and you and Dave are really in the best builders...

Wow! Is there nothing you can't build? The construction and detail is simply breathtaking! I love all the "pointy bits" and R2's cameo:) You should check out my comic when you have time.

Congratulations, Steef...you've just officially beaten last year's defending champion! (but only by the tiniest margin!) This was an insanely close call, but your story line kept things neck-and-neck, while your attention to detail with the interior work put you over the top for me. Beautifully done! See ya next round.

I looked at Andrew's MOC first and wondered how you could possibly out do him. Then I saw this! You out did yourself Steef, my vote is with you. ~dave
Oh! Wow! I wasn't expecting to beat him. Not by far. Thank you very much. And also an applause to Andrew and his great dragon. |

excellent build! im loving the rock tower! the flying cloud cart is kind of odd though, as it is the cart that has wings and not the horses in front of it.
Thanks. The cart is MAGICAL though, so it's bound to be a little strange. You think a flying cart is odd, but flying horses are perfectly okay ;-) |
