1971 Ferrari 512M (Modificato)___________________________________________________________
Well, I finally completed a project which I have been wanting to do for quite some time now. A while back, I came across the Hot Wheels version of the Ferrari 512M and it instantly became one of my favorite cars. I knew I had to build it in Lego…Much time passed between then and when I finally made it. This was spurred in part by Biczzz’s stellar Alfa Romeo Tipo 33. It inspired me to challenge myself to build this car.
It took me about three weeks of design grid work and building in MLcad until I achieved the completed version. It was certainly a complex build; my most challenging one to date. There were many obstacles to overcome, but I feel that the end result does the original car justice. I tried to build the car as authentically as possible to the 1:1 version in order to maximize realism. Some of my solutions were also inspired by the aforementioned Alfa, so thanks are in order to Biczzz.
The car is built to about 1/18 scale and contains approximately 650+ pieces. It was originally intended to be blue like the Hot Wheels car, (which is actually modeled after the Sebring winner in 1972), but due to a lack of parts in that color scheme, I decided to make it in classic Ferrari red with white which was popular with these cars. As a side note, the wing is accurate in that 512M’s sometimes ran a massive rear wing, a medium wind, or the winglets. There is a full interior, suspension and brake detail, and of course, the beautiful 5.0 liter 12 cylinder engine with exhaust running towards the rear of the car. That exhaust was probably the most time consuming, but I feel that the end result does the real car justice and is definitely one the car’s highlights…both

The 512 series began in 1970 with the 512S version. Ferrari only produced 25 versions in order to homologate it for racing in Group 5 to get around Group 6 engine restrictions. Basically, Ferrari built 25 race cars installed horns, lights, and spare tires to make them legal for public roads, but this was a “road” car that could actually go 235mph!
The car was built with a tubular space frame chassis and stressed aluminum skin cockpit. Ferrari then applied, for the first time in their history, fiberglass panels to form the rest of the body. Soon after, the 512S was modified into an open-top configuration. To allow this, Ferrari simply said that these were “Spyder” versions of the car.
After the 1970 Le Mans, the 512M’s came into being. The M stood for Modificato, (Modified), because the body work was revised, the Spyder was no longer available, and the engine now produced 620hp at 9,000rpm.
The 512M raced successfully in that it won the 12 hours of Sebring, the 1000K in South Africa, and brutally outpacing the Porsche 917s in the process…In fact, in South Africa, the car won by 2laps!

Oh... I actually do try to build this car too.
When I do my research on the F512M, I found that I'm getting 2 results. One is the real F512M that I had built, and one is this race car. So, after I finished the F512, I started to figure out this car as well, so that I can obtain a combo of 512M creation. But I failed to complete it due to the shape of the headlight. So, I try the other creation by that existing frame, which later become another failure -- The Enzo. [A lot of failure huh?] |

Kin, I don't get it. We are talking about two quite different cars that have the same name. This one is a 1970'ies race car, yours is the ultimate Testarossa streetcar from 1994 (Testarossa 1984 - 1991, 512TR (for TestaRossa) 1991 - 1994 and finally 512M (for Modificata) 1994 - 1996)), which is the last regular Ferrari with a mid-rear mounted V-12. This isn't LEGO... It's a piece of art! A very beautiful car with details all over. The 512M or S is on my list of "Ferraris-I'd-like-to-build". Opening doors would be fine, but how? The engine with all the exhaust pipes...just WOW! A 10/5 MOC for sure. Ciao, Jens |

Wow! First to visit and comment Perfect re-creation of the 512. Everything about this car is perfect- I love how detailed the engine bay is! Everything is perfect about the car! Great job on the exhaust/headers detail. I also own the Hotwheels version of this car. Great build- I think you just made it into my favorite builders list! Great work! Keep building!
