Round #5 is here and it's Dave Sterling vs. Mark Legorski in a Set Alternate throw-down!
About this creation
Round #5
Dave Sterling vs. Mark Legorski
Category: Set Alternate
Set Choice: #7097 Troll’s Mountain Fortress
Piece Count: 844
Pieces Not Used: 34

It's Round #5 kids and this time I am up against the honorable Mr. Mark Legorski who is bringing his A-Game once again. The category we were given was ‘Set Alternate’ and the title pretty much says it all. Pick a set and build a ‘B-Model’ using only the pieces from that set. I wanted to build something that I could see LEGO putting on the back of the box as a ‘B-Model’ and, in my mind, I have accomplished that goal. But enough chatter…I now present you with my Set Alternate…The Sigil Tower Siege.

I chose set #7097 Troll’s Mountain Fortress because I hadn’t had a chance to build in the high fantasy genre yet for the 2009 MOCOlympics and I wanted to give it a try. Hopefully I will do Eggy Pop proud.

You can see the pieces spread out on my work table in preparation for the marathon build. There is good piece variety in this set and it comes with some exclusive Minifigs that are pretty cool…especially the ‘Witch Troll’. It contains 844 pieces total and I managed to use all but 34 of them in my creation.

Here’s an overview of The Sigil Tower Siege set. Basically we’ve got a tower built on some rocks with caverns below. This is the Sigil Tower and it is controlled by the Orcs/Trolls. Next, there is a bridge crossing over the lower caverns that the Knights are storming across. Finally, you can just see the edge of the forest at the far right of the set.

Here’s a better shot of the lower caverns. There are actually two entrances and we see the gated entrance here guarded by two large trolls with clubs.

Another overview shot…just in case you needed to see it again before we move on.

Here is the Sigil Tower itself. Note the angry Orc King atop the tower shouting orders to his minions below.

Here’s the edge of the forest I was talking about. With all the foliage included with this set, how could I not try and build a tree?

Now we move on to the back of the set which contains most of the ‘playability’ of this set. You can see the stairs to the lower caverns and the sacrificial altar/torture chamber.

Here’s a closer shot of the altar. But wait…there’s more!!!

Yes! The altar doubles as a second entrance to the lower caverns. I thought adding a movement function with a hidden room might be kind of fun. As a kid, I always used to do this kind of stuff.

Here is where the Witch Troll works her deadly magic and brews her hideous potions. This room also contains the crystal ball where she spies on the Knights and plots their destruction.

A parting shot of the altar just because I really like it. The captured Knight doesn’t look too happy. Will his friends be able to come to his rescue? With the LEGO Sigil Tower Siege...you decide!

And finally…here are the pieces that I wasn’t able to use in this MOC. Some of them are extras I’m sure, but I count them all in the set.

Commentary:
-------------------
I really hope you enjoyed my take on the Trolls Mountain Fortress. This was my first time building with a limited palette like this and it was actually really enjoyable. I may have to start doing more B-Models now. :-) I think the most interesting part of this exercise was that I got a small glimpse of what it might be like to be a LEGO Designer using a limited palette and working under a deadline. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience.

I have about a hundred sets that are unopened, and would give you the benefit of the doubt. However, this matter has already been covered. You have my vote and the win. Lee. (phenomenal twist on the the build btw).

Well I just got one question, you showed the set completely unopened, call me paranoid if you will, but was it new or did you already have it? (I know I just can't keep a new Lego set unopened, I just rip and tear)

I'll take care of that question for you Dave. Mark, I left a comment on your entry to help answer that for you. And I'll say it again here...http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/101733 yes WE all want to kill him too! ~ Chris.

Bravo! Hopefully the judges see what I see and that's a win for you. While your opponent did a fine build, this has so many dimensions to it. The sacrifice chamber rocks. Good luck.

Awesome entry, I just think it looks a bit too much like the original one. Of course it's only a "superficial" feeling, and it fades quickly as you move on :)

Great work. Love a good human sacrifice on the weekends. Next time, I'll bring the popcorn. I love that you focused on playability and story here (oh, I like stories), yet were you to actually turn this over to a kid he or she could go in so many different directions via the imagination. Impressive!

Torture chamber FTW! hahaha. So let me guess, in the torture chamber it's either putting an AFOL in there with only clone troopers and a multi color pack of sharpies OR a computer with access to mocpages but that will only turn on when either Kelso or Kescenovitz posts? (gonna hear about that one later hehehe) Overall just a perfect post and and I can't say this any better than YOU GOT MY VOTE, HAZAA!... I'll go sit in the corner now. ~ Chris.

First glance, I admit, I was a little disappointed. Then I looked closer and read the descriptions and was VERY impressed. It has definite playability and ever better, it looks FUN. Really great work here Dave.

Quoting Steef de Prouw Nice work! I think you could've used those ladders as an extension of the black fence on the back (above the torture chamber).
Ya know Steef...after I took these pictures I thought the same thing. :-) Whoops.
