About this creation
"How To..."

Hello people of Mocpages, I am Robo Man and I would like to present this presentation to a select few of you on how to make a Star Wars creation. I bet you must be asking why am I taking the time to do this, well the answer is quite simple. Everyday on Mocpages I hope to find good Star Wars creations in the most recent section of Mocpages and all I find are Custom Clones, CUSTOM CLONES, and MORE CUSTOM CLONES. It is annoying see them all! Honestly, I think some of you creators out there have just gotten lazy and have forgotten how to make a Star Wars creation. It looks like I will have to start at the place that some of you are at and try to help you by giving you sets.

STAGE 1:

Okay so this is where you are at right now. I bet a lot of you on Mocpages do not even bother to look at this if you saw it, am I correct? Anyways that is not the point. Okay so now it is time for me to guide you set by set on how I think a true custom clone should be presented. For the most, I understand that the creators that are posting these endless floods of custom clones are little kids. I mean hey I was one and I was horrible at building and look at me now (wait… you know what never mind :P) For you little ones out there please ask your parents to help you take pictures! It is not going to cost them anything. Blurry pictures are just a big no, no!

STAGE 2:

Okay so hopefully after you have asked your parents to help you out on picture taking your creations have improve a little, but not a lot. Therefore, another thing that is bad is the clone on a plain old base plate. That to me is just appalling. So I bet some of you would say “I’ll just add a broken droid.” Well that does do something but not a lot, but it does help. However, if you have not notice a base plate is so dull with no detail except studs. Therefore, what I would do is select a planet that your Clone is stationed on or is fighting on and look at the terrain. Since my custom clone is Boss from Republic Commandos, I will select Geonosis because of its terrain “rocky”. So try to build that terrain in the presentation

STAGE 3:

So now, you are at this stage and from stage 1 to this is a mayor improvement in my opinion but not enough to attract a lot of viewer or comments. I mean I would not complain as much if I saw clones in Stage 3 but there are only few. Now I will show you and explain to you, in my opinion on what I look for in a Creation with Featuring a Custom Clone and I am sure others too.

STAGE 4:

Okay so this is a little Diorama based off the first level of “Republic Commando”, where you have to regroup with your squad [NOTE: Selecting a scene or a part from the movies that features your custom clone is always a good way to add accuracy and more views and comments]. Therefore, as you can see, I took as much details as I could and added it around my custom clone. My custom clone now has a better overall presentation and not only that, it also catches the eyes of maybe TFOLs or even AFOLs if it is made in a different way by having a technique such as effects like blaster fire, cross fire, fire, wreckage and so on. Now as a Star Wars creator I make things that really have not been made or not seen to often, like AT-ST, ARC-170, AT-KT, Imperial Star Destroyers and so on [As you have seen in my creations]. I get many comments because those creations I make are ones that no one has thought of making them without a set to support them. Therefore, for this stage you need creativity, patience, and time. I say time because this stage 4 creation took me about maybe 4 days not a lot but to be honest it is still not complete, close to it though. Usually a creation takes me a good week and half to finish, so TAKE YOUR TIME!

Those are the steps on helping you improve your Star Wars CUSTOM CLONES creations. Maybe later on I will do a segment on how I make my vehicles or my secret ways to making creations, but we will see. If this works and Custom Clones start improving then I will consider making more “How to” creations.

I really hope this really helps some of you and I hope to see a few stage 4s out there on Mocpages or even 3s. PLEASE TRY TO SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THIS CREATION BY GIVING LINKS TO THIS PAGE, TO THOSE THAT HAVE CUSTOM CLONES

SIDE NOTE: Sean, Chris and Mark I have read the rules of Mocpages and I am aware that this is not a creation, I intend to delete it in a week. I just want to get my message across. So please I ask you not to delete it. Thank you

i'm happy you made this, because even i showed 4 (i think) custom clones, and nothing else. It's been long since i haven't built with lego's, i always stick to bionicle..... heheh, i need to make a battle of starwars soon!

Yeah, this is great creation about how build good Moc with custom clone! Really, few months ago I was in stage 1.. Very thanks for this Moc. If this isn't annoying, please comment my diorama with custom commandos http://mocpages.com/moc.php/176547 Thanks.

Hey Robo,I took your advice with this, and with all of my SW dio's,well,I had a bunch of custom clones from like,a year ago,so all of my dio's will probably have a custom in it.Anyways,I wanted to know if this is kinda what you meant with this moc. -> http://mocpages.com/moc.php/171282#reviews Thanks.

Looking for inspiration to build an airplane? I would build something that can carry troops rather than a fighter, but still include the sleek look of a fighter plane.
  November 7, 2009
Those big dioramas that you're talking about I don't like. I'd much rather see a custom clone on an 8x8 baseplate with nothing around. To me, those large vignettes draw attention away from the CUSTOM CLONE and draw more attention to THE VIGNETTE.

There should be a link to this page in every Star Wars group (and there are a lot!!). A fanastic positive way to help those who haven't grasped MOCpages as well as some of us would like. To the Custom Clone makers who are objecting to this MOC; he's been kind enough to help you, which on MOCpages is becoming increasingly rare, so man-up and take the advice, it's free! If any Tuner makers from the car groups are reading this; the same rules laid out in this MOC apply to car creations too, taking little steps makes a big difference to the quality of MOCpages.

I think this WILL help, but one thing, most kids take good pics, second of all,I almost take it as an insult, but it still helps, and third of all, thanks Flare for using me as an example!!hehehe :P,kidding.
  October 29, 2009
This is a really good tutorial and if you hadn't made this then I would have. Most people think that all custom clone makers are "Clonetards" but that would be like saying that all people who build with Lego are imature nerds(phipson). You showed us that is not the case and I appriciate that. I still laugh at some of the Clonetard jokes though

Nice! I think custom clones are really overbuilded around this site(but not as much as Halo minifigs, tough)... And nice vig, by the way! __ Hey, Gringat, I do have one Bionicle vig on my page, it's quite simple, but was what I could do with the few system pieces I have... Also, on BZPower, there were a contest about making one....

This gives the Bio-builder an intriguing idea! I have bionicles... and I have NEVER seen a vig for them before. Obviously a vig would have to be HUGE to fit them in, but perhaps I could try...

Good guide! But.... you shouldn't delete it after 1 week! It might not be a real moc, but a lot of bad "customizers" need this guide.
  October 29, 2009
OK fine but I still think that you AFOLs are discrimination against us clone customizers as a whole. you should be picking on the guys who take bad pictures and make pathetic clones, not everyone, including guys who actually do a good job.

Well don't delete it. It does have a few creations in it. I hope this helps those kids. I feel like building a clone and landscapeing now. Also, you could put your clone in a base. With Gray Smooth plates aranged well. Those get my attention, and I'm a TFOL.

Quoting Commander Flare ! i agree. but you did sort of insult me, as I am a clone customizer. i don't think customizing clones is bad but there are a lot of horrible pictures which is messing up the idea of custom clone! i mean if you look at someone like me or Seph, we're good at painting our clones, and we give nice clear pictures. is there a problem with that, robo?
Look you can think what you want, but the truth hurts, I mean have you read the comment below. Enough said

Perfect Boss, and you did a great job turning a video game scene into a moc. I love the downed gunship turret put in there, very accurate to the game. Also, the rocky background really adds definition, nice touch. 5/5, man, you're too good!

"SIDE NOTE: Sean, Chris and Mark I have read the rules of Mocpages and I am aware that this is not a creation, I intend to delete it in a week." Actually, this IS a lego creation as stated in the rules. You built a creation out of LEGO... that's all it needs. You're good. for goodness sake PLEASE leave this up and hopefully some of the kids will learn something. For the record, I completely agree with Robo here. The more time you take and more detail and background you add, the more people are going to want to look at it. Trust me on this. I don't even click on "custom clones" these days. Now the "stage four" that robo here did, THAT I'll click on and check out any day. Take heed and listen well to Robo and you'll be on you way to the top! ~ Chris.

Quoting Dylan B Some great advice, Robo. I didn't know you were building clones now! I'd hope that you would keep this permanently up so EVERYONE can see it. It's not a MOC but it does make for good example around here, so I still thing it counts. If not, I'll probably have a lot of explaining to do, if you know what I mean. -Dylan

An excellent idea, Robo! I really hope the people learn from this. Personally, I never understood the obsession with drawing and customizing a minifig (I was always a MOCer). Good day
  October 28, 2009
Oh, one more thing: no matter how obscure the thing you're making is, you've got to do it well. Also, don't choose something too obscure, otherwise only the SW geeks will look at it. And, being an SW geek myself, I can tell you that we like to hang around other geeks and debate tje relative merits of the USS Enterprise and an Imperial-class Star Destroyer. (but that's a topic for another day) For example, don't go pick, say, the Naboo N-1 Advanced Security bomber. 99.9% of the commenters will either say "don't you know naboo starfighters are yello not blue???" or "are you sure this is real?". Not only that, but as a unit from an RTS game, there is very little reference material or high-quality reference pics.
  October 28, 2009
...and ask a parent to edit your image. (or do it yourself) I like Paint.net. It's freeware, with Photoshoping power. On those Geonosis pics, you could increase the brightness and run a noise removal. And if you reize all pics to 800x600, you'll cut down upload time to under 15 seconds per pic. (on a good day :)

But I undertood you message, many people makes custom clones and don't add a diorama our additonal info and stuff, I think you gave a good tip for all Star Wars builders, My mocs for example, the last ones are very simple, I just added them for fun and to show Mocpages that I am still here but many stuff its coming, again, great work with these tips, I think Mocpages will use them and think about it.
