Pillar Of Autumn - WIP Part 1
POA WIP
About this creation

~2005
Thought to myself that the Pillar of Autumn® (POA) from the videogame Halo® might be a relatively easy and interesting ship to build out of Lego®.

Early 2007
Thought to myself again, that maybe this should be built, and built to a scale of a SHIP ( A SHIP is generally defined as a Seriously Huge Investment in Parts, which – and is typically a large spaceship over 100 studs in length.)

This thought progresses to ordering extra dark bley tiles with a great many of my orders on Bricklink. In addition, the accumulation of greebling elements also begins.

I also start to download pictures and fan-art of this rather well known ship. I ponder engine design by studying other people’s SHIPs.

2008
Con’t to gather parts. Graduate from residency. Move. Start in a new practice. Start renovations, which includes my Lego Room.

April 2009
Lego Room mostly finished and renovations on the house are about 90% done. Start to build again, but just with some design ideas. Still collecting parts for various projects I have stored in my noggin.

June 2009
After recovering from Brickworld, and talking to Brian K. and Mark K., I decide that it is time for the POA to be created. This is only about 18-months later than I had originally planned.

Another 50+ orders to Bricklink over June/July – 3+ packages/weekday rolling in. Start thinking about how to build this SHIP. Decide that I need to add more dark grey tiles to my design – thousands more tiles ordered in this decidedly more expensive colour.

July 15, 2009 (very late)
As I lay out four tiles: 2x 1x2 dark bley and 2x 1x2 dark grey, I declare to Heather, Dennis, Alex on G-Chat that the POA has been born. Ironically, I am saving these same four tiles as the last ones to be placed. They will be motivation throughout this build.

July 16, 2009
Put the kids to bed and I start analyzing the pictures I have downloaded through the past couple of years. Photoshop is opened, and I create a spreadsheet of measurements.

I have finally decided that I am aiming for ~2m. After measuring a 2x12 plate and finding that it is close to 9.5cm long, I then determine that 1.98m (close to my original thought of 1.8m) will work out to about 250-studs in length, 70-studs at its highest, and 54-studs at it’s widest. Hmmm, might need more tiles though.

July 18 – August 8, 2009
I struggle over the design of the first of 20-rings that will make up the 4th section of the ship. I decided to break it down into 5 sections. This section is the largest and is 120-studs long, 60-studs high, and 42-studs wide.

August 9 – October 27, 2009
The rings are completed and put together. Many more Bricklink orders ($$$$) go into the SHIP.

October 28, 2009
WIP pics sent to Phipson. And I quote “HOLY S##T! If I could actually have an “O” from looking at lego, that would have done it!” (edited for public viewing).

October 29, 2009
Last of the plates to line the sides. Some pictures are taken for your enjoyment. I am not sure if I am going to start tiling at this point, or if I am going to start designing the next section – time will tell…

Goal date for completion: May 2010 to be ready for Brickworld 2010.

A special thanks goes out to Stephen Loftus from Maritime Science Fiction Modelers. His screen shots and 3D images have been invaluable in this endeavour.

I am currently recruiting builders to build a minifig scale Super Star Destroyer, and I think you are just the man for the job. We have already secured the Cinncinati Bangles stadium (they won't be needing it), and are currently depleting the world of ABS plastic.

Thanks for all the support guys. I have rebuilt most of this section, and slimmed it down to the correct scale. This set me back about 3-months in the build. As there was no hope then that it was going to be ready for BW2010, I went on to other builds. Most of which have just been for me, and I didn't bother posting. This has been moved to a new work space, and I am getting ready to finish up this section, so I can start on the next.

Sorry about the silence, my jaw dropped so far down that my larynx fell out. Give me a second...Anyway, I was on the verge of fainting when I saw all those technic parts inside the Autumn. I made up ships for the other three seasons: Obelisk of Winter, Column of Summer, and the Tower of Spring. ;-) This is going to blow Stebbins' P.O.A. out of the water. When is W.I.P. 2 coming out?

:o..... Uh..... er.. THAT IS TOTALLY WICKED!!! You should make spaces in your next areas of the ship to put your Pimm Industries/Highland Battalion(Company) I know that defeats the whole purpose of a Halo ship, but hey. Just a thought. P.S My little brother thinks u should use that ship from Pimm Industries and go through a black hole and u go through time and fight your castle group. GREAT MOC!

Wow! that looks prety good! the shape needs some refinement but i like it, it looks as if you droped it only one or two loose pieces would fall off. I am curently working on a Pillar Of Autumn, but its smaller, and its in a playset kinda format. this site right here >>> http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/sloftus_poa/ is a big help, mabie it'll help you. check out my captan keys decals, one or two custom minifigures for the build would be a good adition! Keep it goin!

I definitely am with the crowd on this one! This Moc is going to rank up there with the Gibraltar Bridge and the Yamoto. I look forward to viewing the end product. BTW, you've just given me good ideas on how to build the gas bags for my Brittany airships. I can round out the surfaces with those curved 1x6 bow pieces that I like so much! I hope that when people view them, they'll realize that Lee Jones made it possible!

Holy $H!%....yeah man that thing is HUGE!!! I don't envy you having to do that repair job. I just had to do some last week on my courthouse.....took me a couple hours. Can't imagine how long it will take you on this!
 I made it
  November 5, 2009
Please note, I made a calculation error. This is too wide, and I am narrowing it accordingly. I can't just make it taller to account for the width, as the length would then have to almost double. It is already going to be about 2m long. I am working on the 'repair' job at this very moment.

Quoting Grand Admiral Darren . This is definitely gonna be the best Halo scaled ship if you can pull it off, however I might suggest making it a bit narrower, it's a bit chubby now, and the angles are off. But in due time I guess that will all be fixed.

I'm so glad you decided to take on this project. This ship will look spectacular in Lego. It will be interesting to see how you do the rest of the internal framework. I advise using glue if you ever plan on moving this from convention to convention. A good example why is courtesy of Brickplumber. His Massive Hoth diorama was solidly built but it still split in two in shipping.

Quoting david drake WOW!! Never heard of it as I'm not a Halo fan at all. My exposure to Halo has been limited to the "Halo Kiddies" on here, from which you will undoubtedly be unanimously voted in as Supreme Being in the Universe. This isd an amazing structure, and its massive size creates actual structural integrity issues most of us never have to deal with. I wonder, for the benefit of us poor slobs not schooled on Halo, might you be able to post a good representative pic of the actual ship so that we can understand what part of the ship you have already built? Great design work, and uh, it all makes sense now where those BrickLink inventories went to!!!
