Do You Need Music? + A Small Tour + A Rant Against the Unfairness of the World
Three seperate ideas in one MOC!
About this creation
The Question
Surprise! You've put your cursor over this picture for an extended length of time! Either that or this picture is taking an exceptionally long time to load up in your browser window.
I haven't posted any creations for a while now, I know. I've been working on a rather large creation lately, and it's been taking quite a lot of time. It all started with a vehicle that I created: I had intended to take pictures and put them up right away, but I later decided to throw in a diorama for presentation. It wasn't until I started measuring that I realized that the MOC would have to be very large to contain everything.

Everything was going perfectly when calamity struck!

I accidentally kicked it over when getting down from the bunk bed one groggy morning! Okay, so that's not the real dilemma, but it did happen. (I also accidentally tripped over a Lego bin, which fell off of the other one it was perched on and landed on the delicate vehicle component of the MOC. It barely survived.)

The real problem is that I had to take my radio out of my room to use elsewhere in the house to replace a malfunctioning one. After this happened , I suddenly found myself devoid of inspiration: I couldn't concentrate on building, and I'd just sit there for about half-an-hour and build a few tablescraps and make a general mess without making any progress.

It turnes out that it's the music that keeps me there, and while I'm sitting there I build with my Legos and come up with all sorts of designs. If I'm stuck on something, I can sit there and listen to the music and think of ways around the problem without becoming bored.

I suppose that I'll eventually have to get the radio back into my room soon, or else I'll stop working on it altogether and it does nothing but gather dust. When that happens, I gradually pirate parts from my creation for others until it closely resembles Swiss cheese, at which point it's pretty much:

History!

So the question stands:
Do you need music to help you build?

The Tour
And now for a tour of my room! Well, sort of: this is only half of it. I don't have enough tan bricks to do more. In fact, my room's not even tan, it's a dull orange (which I hate), but the closest thing is tan, and it actually looks fairly close in some pictures due to the lighting.

Let's start at the beginning, shall we?
It was the radio that started this whole thing, the above story is all true, and I actually came up with this earlier today when it struck me how much I missed being able to play music while building.

The radio in this picture is actually the wrong color (it should be gray, but those parts are being used), and it's in the wrong part of my room here, normally it's in the corner, near the head of the bunk bed on the floor, but I had to be able to show it here.

Behold the general mess of my room! When my Mom first saw this, she said that it looked just like my room, only cleaner. She's right.

I really love how the lighting came out in these pictures; the blue windowpanes light up so bright in the sun that the camera took them as white, but they cast a bluish light on everything. This, more than anything else is the finishing (and quite accidental) touch that makes it feel like it really is my room. During the summer, we open the swimming pool in the back yard, and the light reflects off of it and shines through the window and turnes everything slightly blue and bounces ripples of light everywhere.

My new bins are stacked all over the place, just like in real life. I've got most of them up against the wall, but there are some that I still have all over the floor, taking up too much space.

So what if it's bright blue!? I don't care! What does bother me is that it's too short, but I can't get rid of it until my room is clean enough to move it out. Like that'll ever happen! I'm under the spell of the ABS plastic. Normally my bed is messier, covered in books and papers and usually needs to be made up, but I can only do so much with the parts I have.

This shot gives me goosebumps. It's so surreal to look down on myself from my bunk bed. From here, it looks so real that I can't believe it's made of Lego. Sort of an out-of-body experience going on here.

So there you have it, MMM headquarters is in an average, messy room. Now that's hardly threatening, is it? You can trust us, we're just like you; down home people that love apple pie and hotdogs. :P

Hope you enjoyed the Tour!

The Rant

I had more than half finished this post when I accidentally (yes, my life is full of those) lost everything. I had let my mouse drop down to the task bar and then unintentionally right-clicked twice. The first click brought up the options menu, and the second one clicked "Close". It did so without any sort of confirmation dialogue asking if I really wanted to close all seven tabs. After that happened, I sat there with a similar expression on my face to the one above. I tried to restore my previous session, but to no avail; everything was gone.
I had sort of hoped for a little sympathy for my lost work, but all I got was a bunch of reasons why I had to work on my Algebra and how if I had done it in the first place, none of this would have happened because it would have changed the flow of time and caused a different series of events to take place that likely would not have included my unfortunate error.
Whatever. I just rewrote as much as I could and then did the rest, and I'm glad that I did, because I couldn't keep my train of thought before.

As you can see, life's not fair; therefore, I present this sage advice:
Keep Smiling! :D

Pretty neat little MOC! I had a similar exprience not to long ago. (breaking a big MOC by falling on it, not only did a week's worth of work go down the drain, but I also got a bruise the size of a watermelon!)

Quoting Flare . LOL. You should get a iPod shuffle if you are so dependant on music.
I know. In fact, a shuffle is the only model I'd ever buy, since I like my music randomized (one of the reasons I love radio).

Heh. Good point about the music. Also, the awesome thing about having a bunk bed is that you can have one bed for sleeping, and another bed for storage =)

I can't MOC without music either. I think it's a good way to get inspired while building.

Losing your music, or accidentally damaging your creation?

I feel it is much easier to build when listening to music also, but at the moment I find I don't have enough bricks to convey the music as I wish. I also find digital programs hard as much of my creations are me throwing pieces together, thinking "That could be a..." And about the accidental destruction, I hate it when that happens! Imagine a 10 inch bionicle titan falling onto a 2 foot tower. SMASH! :)

Quoting Master Shifu Leo J Insightful MOC; well-depicted build! At least you still have your LEGO®. My kids have taken control over mine. I get leftovers... XD
I've still got a few months of TFOL-ness left, and I don't have a chance of kids for a few years at least, so I'm safe.
Quoting Jonathan Coyle This sounds just like me. Seriously: A)I need music while I build B) The general description matches my room and C)That sounds just like what would happen to me. All in all: Both our lives in a nutshell. Thanks for the laugh. (But seriously? Seven tabs! Isn't that a little much? I mean I usually have 3-4 open.)
That's the oter thing, my parents were booking a hotel and I was using the same internet window a little later after they had left it up. I had about three tabs up for this at once (creation page, preview page, second preview page), and another one for music.

i can extremely relate to the music part, because when i try 2 make mocs now a days, without music, im completely lost in fact, 1 song that help form the foundation of a universe im workin on was "evisceration plague" by cannibal corpse

Quoting Mister Bones Oh, I feel your pain. I was halfway done with a large diorama of a battle scene and….dropped it. I still have not had the strength to fix it. As for your music question, yes, music greatly assists me depending on the build. For some creations I use Classical, some I use Jazz; most I use Progressive and Gothic Metal. Nice creation here, by the way, I like the lighting and design of the room. Cheers.
Ouch, that sounds awful. I did something similar once, but I always build things to be strong as well as good looking, so they usually survive. I mostly listen to Progressive and Classic Rock when I build.
Quoting LoVeR HaTeR all of this is so true. iv'e had all three of these things happen to me. i stopped listening to music when i built for a little while and couldn't produce anything worth posting. i have also dropped a delicate moc and watched it explode in slow motion (not as cool as it sounds). and just recently i tried uploading a moc and when i did the pictures were all scrambled and in the wrong places.
I know all about things exploding in slow motion; I'm a klutz and a butterfingers to boot.
Quoting LoVeR HaTeR check out my mocs!
Please don't ask people to do that, it's not something that's looked kindly upon on the 'pages, and I'll almost always return the favor when someone leaves a quality post.

Quoting Brady G Anywho, ignore me. Carry on!
As you wish. :P
Quoting Sebeus I music inspires me to build better mocs :) that's a nice radio, my room doesn't look very clean either, though it's mainly lego spread around I can't just put it all in boxes, every piece lying in my room is meant to be used "soon" :p Anyway, good luck with your big diorama, I hope you don't come across more unfairness ;)
Music diesn't exactly inspire me, but it does help me think and focus on what I'm trying to do. I also used to just cover the floor in pieces and only sorted them by what type of project was going on nearby. Now I sort my pieces to a certain degree, and it does make it much easier to find parts. Thanks for the sentiment, but I'm afraid that unfairness in unavoidable in life. (Perhaps I'm better off dead, then? ;) )
Quoting Horatius . I've never tried to listen to music while I build, but maybe I should start. Sounds like a good idea... I once spent a lot of time re-doing my homepage, and then it got deleted. I was too annoyed to re-make the changes, though. Well, good build and good luck on the project.
Maybe you shouldn't listen to music when you build; you could end up like me! I usually save a text document with the page code in it, but this time I neglected to, and ended up paying for it.
