The Red Army

The Red Army is here, finaly. The Soviet armed forces varied a lot in its uniform, abilities, and composition. This team represents an early to mid war (1941-43) team that is not comprised of untrained peasants (like much of the Red Army was), but actual trained soldiers. The uniforms are typical, but not the rule. Pants were found in many colors, although the quilted jackets were normaly this color of pale green. The webbing was also varied, and these represent an average. The tan pouch was issued to nearly all infantry, but the auxilary webbing was extra. High-end teams such as this were given webbing suited for their ammunition and such.

The sergeant's hat is made of a baseball cap with the brim cut off, and pieces of mortorbike helmet visors glued around for flaps. It is a Ushanka hat of sorts, being seen in a lot of styles through out the war. The infantry helmets are pilot helmets trimmed and shaved, with the little goggle-attachment holes filled in with putty.

The webbing is cardboard cut outs drawn by me, but the tan pouches are tan lego pieces cut to shape.

The weapons are all 100% lego, cut and glued.

These teams were used for close-combat fighting, such as house-to house and street fighting.

I tried to make a textured appearance for the quilted jackets used by the Soviets. I painted a thick coat of the green and then dragged a very sharp pencil down in vertical lines to make the quilted pattern. It is not so easy to see.

Only 2 have the rarely issued harness webbing.

Sergeant Attamenchenko. PPs42 SMG. Note the red tabs on his jacket collar. His cig is made from string glued stiff and painted white, the same as my U.S. troops.

   Private Rywizak. PPSh41 SMG.

PPs42. Almost unarguably the best submachine gun of WWII. It was very reliable, light, easy to manufacture, accurate, easy to maintain, and had a high rate of fire (600RPM).

A slightly complicated looking model, but not really. Rods of different length glued together, with the trigger from a musket, sights from a rifle, and stock from the Harry Potter window. The magazine is from the surveyor's tool, from the Adventurers sets.

PPSh41. A good submachine gun, but too heavy, long, and innaccurate. It was cheap to produce however, and was fairly reliable. It was superceded by the PPs42. A lot of Germans in the Eastern front got a hold of these guns and loved them because of their robustness and simplicity.

Easy build, just a pirate rifle with a trimmed and modified 1x1 round piece as the 71 round drum magazine, with piece of a 1x2 grill as the breech.

That's AWESOME!!!! You should make the battle scene from "Enemy at the gates" where the Red Army gets mowed down by German planes while they attempt to cross the river Volga or where there's tons of trench warfare. Could you please give instuctions on how to make your weapons? email me at alsin_at_beach@aapt.net.au
