All hail the princess of color, Rainbow Brite. She’s here to bring a little happiness and color to the final round of the 2009 MOCOlympics.
About this creation
Round #7
Dave Sterling vs. Kevin Fedde
Category: Cartoon Express
It’s the final round of the 2009 MOCOlympics and Cartoon Express is the category. As in previous rounds, I wanted to build something that was totally outside the realm of what I normally build. I decided to try my hand at Miniland-scale building by building characters from one of my favorite cartoons from the 1980’s…Rainbow Brite.

As the story goes, a little orphan girl named Wisp is taken by an unknown force to the Colorless World. She must find the Sphere of Light, but upon doing so, she befriends a sprite, Twink, and a majestic white horse known as Starlite. She rescues the seven Color Kids (one for each color of the rainbow) and finds the Color Belt, which is the tool she needs to bring color to the land.

After using it to defeat the King of Shadows (also known as the Evil Force and the Dark One), an evil hooded being with twitchy fingers, the unknown force that brought her to the Colorless World renames Wisp as Rainbow Brite. She and the Color Kids (and their helpers, the Sprites) live in Rainbow Land and are in charge of all the colors on Earth.

Rainbow Brite (originally named Wisp before taking this name) and her white sprite Twink. In one of the books, it is revealed that Twink used to be red, until villain Murky Dismal threw him into The Pits, which drained him of his colors.

Sprites, live in Rainbow Land and mine Color Crystals from the Color Caves. They also perform other duties for the Color Kids, such as processing Color Crystals into Star Sprinkles, and carting them to storage.

The Sprites are cute, cuddly, and speak their own language, which Rainbow Brite and the Color Kids can understand. They come in every color of the rainbow and have stars on the ends of their antennae.

Lurky, The Dark Princess, and Murky are the main villains who continually show up to try and drain the world of all its color.

The Dark Princess is only officially called "The Princess." She lives in a palace in space and, as the Star Stealer, tries to steal the diamond planet, Spectra. She is very spoiled and greedy, even going so far as to steal Rainbow's Color Belt after witnessing its power (although she never used it, herself). She has a magic jewel that is the source of her power and wears a leather-looking outfit with a long, flowing cape.

Murky is the main villain from The Pits. In one episode it is revealed that, as a toddler, he colored on the walls with crayons, markers, paints, rollers, and finally an industrial airbrush. His mother made him wash off "every bit of color, if it takes all day, if it takes the rest of your life," leading Murky to his hatred of color as an adult. He loves to invent devices to create gloom clouds which remove color and make people hopeless. He is constantly trying to capture the Color Kids or take Rainbow Brite's Color Belt. His full first name is Murkwell.

Lurky is Murky's sidekick who looks like a giant brown Sprite with a large nose. Lurky actually delights in "all the pretty colors!" and dreams of one day riding a horsey like Starlite. Lurky is generally goodhearted and often foils Murky's plans by his clumsy nature.

Final Commentary:
Well, we have finally reached the end of the 2009 MOCOlympics. It has been great competing against all the fantastic builders on MOCPages. There have been so many really amazing creations built over the past three months and I am just really honored to have made it to the final round. Thanks to all the organizers, judges, and competitors for making the 2009 MOCOlympics awesome!

Cangrats on a GREAT build, Dave. You've got my vote. Both of you did an excellent job on the build, and what really swayed it for me was the choice of subject matter. Anyone with the stones to do Rainbow Bright (and provide such a thorough background on the subject in commentary), gets bonus points in my book. Beautifully executed, and two thumbs enthusiastically up for the choice of cartoon! |

Dave... congrats on being a finalist here in the MOColympics! This is a really, really great MOC and choosing between this and Kevin's Tom & Jerry creation is really hard! I love that Tom & Jerry are fully posable (eyebrows!)... and the little scene with the cheese is great. I can just see Jerry pushing a row of giant LEGO bowling balls onto Tom. :) But in the end, I'm going to have to cast my vote for your Rainbow Bright... Your construction is really solid, and I'm a sucker for those little techniques like the fender-piece shoulders and the shoulder-piece ribbon in her hair. The sprite characters are really dead-on, and your overall choice to make Rainbow Bright is not only creative and original in the first place, but these are characters that really make really good-looking LEGO models. Even if Rainbow Bright herself is a bit tall and Stacy-esque. :) |
