Color 3D Mosaic - She's Done!
Finally, after many long nights, she's done. My first attempt at a 3D mosaic in color.
About this creation
She stands 90 studs high and 64 studs across with the frame holding her up slightly larger [~72x94]. She stands on a custom made base plate that measures 76x48. Here she is in a flash photo. I put the soda can there to give a sense of the scale.

The shot above shows her in bright light. She's made up of essentially a wall of 1x1 headlight bricks with a round 1x1 plate on the front. Standing up columns of 1x1 bricks 90 studs high is tricky! :-)

The interesting bit is that since the headlight bricks are hollow and have a hole on the back, when you back light her she lights up like a LiteBrite(tm) toy. The shot below shows her with light behind. I've washed out the background to reduce distracting things like my kids toys :)

The shot below shows a close up of the mosaic itself. Believe it or not, it too /way/ longer to build the supporting frame that it did to actually make the mosaic.

How'd you get a wall of 1x1 bricks to stand vertically? Cheat!

The shot below shows how I supported all those 1x1's using roughly 215 1x6x5 wall panels! Of course, so that the light can get through from the back the entire support frame has to be transparent. I had a much more substantial frame back there but it was not transparent enough. Even the single column in the middle casts shadows at certain angles.

So, there she is - all done. I've no idea what to do with her now. I'm not sure I want to try moving it just yet! :-)

Quoting Chris Phipson Amazing! And the whole "lit from behind" idea is GENIUS! You're going to have to let us know what happens when you attempt to move this thing... I don't envy you at all there. Good luck! ~ Chris.
Update on the whole moving of this piece: put it this way, she made it to Brick Fair 2011 but didn't make it home :-( She's still in the box in several 10K pieces....

Thanks. I think there is a local convention in the fall (brickfair?) and I may attempt to take her there. How? I don't know. I will probably disassemble her a bit and move in pieces. Right now she's still sitting where I built her. :-)

Wow, incredible. I would never have the patience, or skill, to do that. The fact it lights up is amazing as well!
