The Reindeer Express (a 2-6-4 Adriatic, Oil-Burning, Steam Locomitive)
About this creation
- "Here it is, Santa. I present to you "The Reindeer Express"."
- "Woah-Ho-Ho!!!"
LEGO Santa has commissioned Engineer Max to create a new steam locomotive to pull his Holiday Train this year. The original engine that pulled the train just didn't have enough "umph" to haul all of the toys down from the North Pole... and naturally he also wanted a ride with a little more style.

Photos of the "Reindeer Express", a 6-wide LEGO Steam Train MOC* that I built from the "Hobby Train" set #10183. Parts not included in the set were the 9V motor under the tender, the BBB wheels, the technic linkages, the green tree branches, and a few arms of the cow catcher (... oh, and the exhaust cloud was made from Corner Cafe pieces).
The design of the engine and tender were not modeled on any specific steam locomotive. This was basically a free build to see what kind of steam locomotive I could create out of the Hobby Train set #10183. What I came up with was an oil burning steam engine with a 2-6-4 wheel configuration. This wheel arrangement is known as "Adriatic."... Coincidentally, I just read that the Adriatic configuration was first introduced in 1909 on the Austrian State Railway... which makes that red/white stripe down the boiler even more appropriate, matching the Austrian flag.
Since taking the photos, have already made some modifications; Have raised the side greebling one plate height so that the white stripe is seen down the entire length. Have changed the cabin door to red, and added a technic pin door handle. Have changes the red cross-support between the drive valves to black. Have also added a side rail to the platform above the cow-catcher.
