About this creation
This MOC of Percy represents a collaboration between me and my son Ross. I asked Ross to build a Percy to add to our repetoire of Thomas and Friends characters, and so he did, based on
this element. He created a really nice and innovative 6 wide engine, but I thought it didn't have the "feeling" of Percy, who is a saddle tank engine, and thus pretty wide looking.
So I took his ideas, dumped the train base, and reworked him into a 7 wide engine. Ross then touched up my redux and our Percy was born!
I really should find a good pic of the actual Percy so that you can see how close this version is to him! Ross came up with some original building techniques to compensate for the inavailability of certain colors in certain elements-- look closely at the cabin and superheater (gold), and check out the pic below:
For the cabin, Ross inverted 1x2 green thin walls on top of normal ones to "create" a 1x2x2 thin wall in green (currently unavailable in this color). That's why the roof is upside down inverted slopes!
Also, check out Ross' solution to recreating Percy's gold superheater. He took two gold space helmet visors, squeezed a small tire between them to secure them together, and fit it over a 2x2 tile with a vertical pin-- Amazing!

At first glance, I thought it was a real Percy model, it looks so real. Classic example from a experienced builder. |

The power of teamwork results in a fantastic rendition of Percy. The golden dome immediately stands out and as "perfect" for Percy, and the simple, yet effective, drive-arm complements the "toy" aspect of the Thomas(R) sets.
Working in green is a challenge, and the inverted roof solution to the lack of 1x2x2 thin-wall panels in green is smart.
The SNOT-wise boiler is a beautiful form.
Well done. No doubt about it-- it's definitely Percy. |
