Ben Kenobi disabling the Death Star Tractor Beam
About this creation
This is a vignette created for the Star Wars Vig contest on FBTB. Basically, it shows the classic scene from ANH where Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi disables the tractor beam on the Death Star, so that Han, Luke, Leia, Chewie, and the droids can escape.

Here is a nice shot showing (most of) the vig in all its glory. The minute I read the rules for the contest, which stated that the vig could overlap to 10 * 10 at the most, but had no height restriction, this scene just jumped to mind as one where I could really make use of a tall, narrow 'building canvas'

Here is the other side of the controls. I tried to make the tractor beam controls as much like those in the film as possible. Thus, Ben is here pulling down a lever, and in the previous picture you can see the wierd knobs that he will turn next.

Stormie: Whoa... We are REALLY high up.
Ben: Tell me about it. Why would someone place the controls to a crucial piece of equipment above a bottomless pit, with the only access to those controls involving a six-inch wide ledge?
Stormie: Oh, I don't know... Maybe to discourage people like you from messing with it?
Ben: Yeah... well... uh, I like your silver tipped blaster, by the way.
Stormie: They got sick of hearing us complain about how cool your chrome-plated lightsaber handles were.
Ben: Righteous!... Well, I have to go now. [Waving his hand. Theme music cues up here] You never saw me.
Stormie: I never saw you.
Ben: [Still waving hand] The tractor beam is fully functional.
Stormie: The tractor beam is fully functional.
Ben: [Still waving hand] You will miss when you shoot at rebels.
Stormie: I will miss when I shoot at... hey, wait a minute, I do that already.
Ben: Oh... OK... Bye!
Note: In the background of this photo you can see two cool things. First, my solution to how to organize 3000 printed tiles - to stick them on large baseplates and essentially wallpaper the room with them. Second, at the top left you can see a framed certificate - I got it for participating in the Build-the-Trust competition at Brickfest last year. Interesting fact: My PhD is still packed away somewhere, as of yet unframed, yet this hangs with pride on the wall. Tells you something about me, doesn't it?

Here is an overhead view showing some more of the details, as well as illustrating how high the vig actually is.

This is my absolute favorite shot of them all - it just came out really well, and the angle seems to add to the effect.
