To those interested in directions:
"Richard" has been kind enough to create a LDraw file (attached at bottom) that can be used as a reference for building your own P228. Since I never had directions to provide him with, it isn't exactly the same - but it's very close! To view it, you need to download the free software LDraw which can be found at LDraw.org. After installing LDraw, I suggest you download and install MLCAD for an improved user interface.

The Swiss firm of SIG began making high quality pistols, rifles, machine guns, and submachine guns in 1853. Their first pistol, the SIG P210, was adopted by the Swiss military in 1944, however it did not sell very well outside of Switzerland due to its high price. The slow, precise techniques used in its manufacture had taken their toll on the price tag, and, though renowned for its accuracy, the P210 just wasn't attractive to most. However, its Browning-Petter locking system set a foundation for SIG's later automatic pistol designs.
Browning-Petter locking, the patents to which SIG had bought, works by having the rear portion of the barrel enlarged and squared off so as to fit perfectly into the ejection port of the slide. When the weapon is fired, the barrel and slide travel back together for several millimetres. Then, a sloping cam on the bottom of the barrel hits a corresponding cam in the frame, pulling the barrel down and unlocking it from the slide. The slide itself then continues on its journey rearwards, extracting and ejecting the spent casing as it goes. When it returns, the barrel moves back into position to accept the next round.
This locking system was utilised in SIG's next handgun series, the P220 series. These pistols had the excellent quality of the P210, with a somewhat less shocking price tag. One of the pistols in this series, the SIG P226, was tested by the US military along with the Steyr GB, the HK P7M13, the Ruger P85, and the Beretta M92, and was found to be somewhat superior to the winning competitor, the Beretta, but lost out due to the high cost of spare parts. The smaller but similar SIG P228 did get a order from the US Army as the Pistol, Compact, M11, but by this time the 220 series had proved itself around the world in the hands of police, special forces, and Switzerland's own military. Excepting the DAK models, SIG 220 series pistols are DA/SA, and have decocking levers on the left sides. It should be noted that SIG is usually referred to as SIG-Sauer because of their relationship with the German firm JP Sauer & Son, which is the manufacturer of the SIG designs. SIG has their weapons made in Germany to get around the strict Swiss export laws regarding firearms, Nevertheless, SIG is the sole designer of SIG-Sauer weapons.

My own pistol, a P228, answers several requests made in respect to my P9S. First, it is three studs wide, with a barrel and recoil spring guide protruding from the front of the gun when the slide is back. In the P9S, the barrel was an integral part of the slide and traveled with it, leaving a large and unrealistic open space at the front of the gun when the slide was pulled back. My P228 also has a larger removable magazine than the P9S and a moving trigger, a first for me. Enjoy, and tell me what you think.

this is awesome. i downloaded LDraw etc and i right clicked and downloaded the file. but there is only 4 steps and there was also an error box. if you have any advice i would be happy. if notcan you send me some easier way of looking at the tutorial? thechaosmaster@msn.com |

It's good to see the blueprints I made on here! What's not so good is confused visitors.
I'll try to help: 1) Follow the instructions above for downloading and installing MLCAD and LDraw, and 2) Instead of left-clicking the link to the MLCAD project file, right-click it and select 'Save Link As' (or 'Save Target As', or whatever equivalent it is your browser uses), and save the file. You can open the .mpd file with MLCAD after you've downloaded it. |

This is an awesome gun. Good Job. But could you please post a pictures instead of a link for the tutorial? I can't find the download that you showed, and it would be less of a hassle if you just posted pictures straight from the program.

Awesome, as always. I'm a writer, and I saved this as a favorites page in case, along with other modes of research, I ever need to reference the appearance of any of these guns casually. And to Ben Walters...he DID incorporate the magazine into the gun, which is why he specifically made a three-stud pistol unlike the two-stud Walther which could not have a real magazine load. This guy thinks ahead; he clearly knows what he's doing as an engineer, lol. |
