WWII American Dodge Weapons Carrier 51

Known by the troops as the "Beep", it was a jack-of-all-trades 3/4 tonne truck, looking something like a big jeep (hence "Beep"). The WC51 is the weapons carrier version without a winch, the WC52 being the same but with a winch. The M-6 was the anti-tank version with a 37mm AT gun mounted on the back. The WC-54 was the Ambulance version, which I will be building soon. The Weapons Carrier was used for troop transport, supplies, and, as its name implies, carrying weapons such as towed guns and 50 cal. machine guns.

I enjoyed this project mostly because I love beefy 4x4 trucks. The Dodge WC-51 is deffinetly that. The main issue I had in building this was the scale. I would have preferred to build it 8 studs wide, but this seemed too large next to my correct-scale 6-wide jeep. So, I went with 7 studs wide, which made it a real challenge to build, but a lot more fun.

The suspension is the same as my jeep, which gives great articulation but keeps a nice clean and accurate axle and drivetrain design. The center-pivot design gives more room than my technic pin design seen on my Unimog. I was able to incorporate a fairly complicated hood and fender arrangement, while keeping good suspension flex.

The 50 cal. mg is obviously modified. The windshield frame pieces are slightly bent, and the axle shafts and top windshield piece are cut-to-length rods.

Loaded up with an infantry squad. You can see these guys in detail to your left: my US Infantry squad.

   Big truck, little 5-wide cab.

I'm happy with the mostly smooth (studless) finish.

The suspension gives the WC51 a LPAI (Lego-Plate-Articulation-Index) of 6. That means that 1 tire can be up on 5 plates and 1 smooth plate while the other 3 tires still touch the ground. For comparison, my jeep has a LPAI of only 4.

Good shot of the front axle detail, as well as the always-cool chain wrapped around the bumper.

Perhaps I got carried away. I'm beginning to doubt that the real WC51 could actually articulate this much.

That sparetire must have been a pain in the arse for the driver when getting in and out. Not much room to squeeze by it. Also note the steering wheel is missing here. It fell of the "hand" piece holding it, and I never noticed until after the pictures were taken.

American Iron. I always seem to incorporate a shot from down low like this in my photo-shoots.

Contrary to my pre-research opinion, the WC51 tailgate does not swing down on hinges like a conventional tailgate. Rather, it slides down on a track. This was impossible in mini-fig scale lego, so I opted for a tight fit that allows it to slide down stiffly using friction.

The 1x2 jumper pieces on either side of the tailgate can be rotated slightly to give more friction to hold the tailgate snug.

The undercarriage. Quite detailed, showing axles, differentials, driveshafts, and chassis arrangement. Missing: exhaust system. I couldn't seem to find any reference pics.

Shown next to the jeep, the Dodge looks pretty bad-arse. Scale was difficult to keep correct with this project, and I referred to my jeep a lot to keep the WC51 restrained in size.

My neat little front bumper arrangement. Tricky at first to get it to work with a 3-wide grill.

Here is the complicated front fender setup, with the hood module removed. While still humbled by some peoples work, I am really proud of this.

Secrets revealed. Underneath all that funky SNOT hood and smooth plate fenders, there lies the center-pivot suspension system. Its stronger than it looks, but still not up to very rough play.

Now that's good. The only thing I can think of is that it could use some sort of window.

I saw this on Brickshelf a while ago, and i guessed it was yours when i viewed the whole folder. Once again, you have managed to capture all the detail here and keep it it minifig proportion.
