From LEGO Club Show episode 1, it's Zack, the LEGO Maniac Monster!
About this creation
Meet Zack, the LEGO Maniac monster.
While working on a video for an updated version of "Zack the LEGO Maniac", the brief from LEGO came down that it was time to redefine Zack for a new generation (no denim jackets or sunglasses here).
Through some discussion, we came up with the idea that Zack was a normal minifigure kid who, when he gets into building, turns into this big LEGO Maniac monster.
(Two sketches of a potential minifig Zack. We ended up going with the guy on the right, though with the grey pants.)
With that in mind, I designed the monster form of Zack in the same style as my characters from Playback, and actually used this as an opportunity to refine the rig design to be a bit more sturdy and solid.
I took advantage of new ball-and-socket joints that I picked up in an Exo-Force set to make his limbs, and drew inspiration from set #4894 Mythical Creatures in terms of what parts went into his more monstrous aspects.
Even though he is a monster, it was important that he still be likable and fun. Being a huge Jim Henson fan, I took a cue from the Sesame Street Muppets when thinking about his appearance -- he's not a menacing beast, but just happens to look different from you or me. There's also some James P. Sullivan in there, as well as a bit of Wally the Green Monster.
Here are the different stages of construction used to animate Zack's transformation:
