Garmouth-on-Sea Asylum - Construction (1935)
Garmouth-on-Sea Asylum, a follow on from Mornington Asylum.
About this creation
Garmouth-on-Sea Asylum is a follow up to the 2005 asylum ‘Mornington Asylum’. Mornington Asylum was a two-storey Victorian medical asylum, built in the style of the mid-nineteenth century. In its fictional history Mornington was constructed in 1842 in the town of Gloucester by William Mornington. Shortly after dedication Mornington died and Dr Joseph Watson took over who committed some of the worst atrocities of the nineteenth century within its walls. It was only after a fire consumed the place in 1865 that the horrors were revealed.

The story continues with Garmouth Asylum. Almost 70 years later in 1934 the local authorities in Garmouth-on-Sea, a fictional seaside town in North Yorkshire, have declared a pandemic of mental health. Prisons and poor houses are full. There is only one option; build a purpose-built asylum. However Garmouth is unfortunate in its landscape. The only place is for the building to hug the cliff of the nearby cove. It is an unforgiving place. The waves crash high against the rocks.

But construction starts. These photographs show the asylum in February 1935. At this stage the main building is completed, along with a spiral staircase that will eventually connect all the floors.

Stage II - The History of Garmouth Asylum (1936-1940) will follow soon.

Woah.....I'm scared already. The picture is very dramatic. It looks like a real building. It looks like a haunted building too.
