"$400! I can build that myself!" That was my reaction when my son showed me the Star Wars set 10188 the Death Star at the Lego Store.
About this creation
I hadn't built Lego since I was a kid. I remember Lego as red and white 2x4 bricks. I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I wanted a grey Death Star, but when I saw how expensive bulk grey bricks were, I was stuck with using black and white. Black and white make grey - doesn't it? My son wouldn't care, he's 7. What started out as trying to recreate Lego 10188, turned into hours of watching Star Wars DVDs to make some changes, like adding Docking Bay 327 and putting more detail in some scenes. So here's our Death Star.

The Death Star - Conference Room
"This station is now the ultimate power in the universe."

Alderaan's Fate - Superlaser
"Governor Tarkin. I should have expected to find you holding Vader's leash."

Planning the Escape
"Where did you dig up that old fossil"

Wookie Prisoner - Detention Block
"Where are you taking this... thing?"

Rescuing the Princess
"Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?"

The Trash Compactor
"One thing's for sure, we're all gonna be a lot thinner."

Bay 327
"Listen to them. They're dying, R2! Curse my metal body! I wasn't fast enough. It's all my fault! My poor master."

De-activating the Tractor Beam

Back to the Ship

Obi-Wan vs. Darth Vader
"Your powers are weak, old man."

Docking Bay 327
"Run, Luke, run."

Assault on the Death Star - Turbolasers
"We count thirty Rebel ships, Lord Vader, but they're so small they're evading our turbolasers."

Hangar Bay
"Several fighters have broken off from the main group. Come with me."

Luke and the Emperor - The Throne Room
"In time, you will call me... Master."

Our Death Star
"That's no moon."

OMG..... This is the best thing I've seen that someone has done to the deathstar! You did an amazing job with it, white isn't the best but it makes the backround pop out a little more, so amazing, so amazing! Keep it up and please post on my postbox when you make anymore creations, I'd love to see more!

Hey! I think your creation turned out to be pretty good. You designed it for your son, who's 7, right? I think your creation is just good then. It has all the features the real set has+few more. Btw did you check instructions from Lego.com?? Kids like functions just like the lightning you got there. Maybe you could add opening doors/hatches too? "$400! I can build that myself!" You really proved that true!
