About this creation
Based off the Avery Hornet from the Terran Trade Authority book Spacecraft 2000-2100, A.D.. This was very difficult to translate into Lego due to the limitations of Lego parts and the curviness of the source material. Nevertheless, I feel that the end result was faithful to the original, and am mostly satisfied with it.
Construction Details
The nosecone is constructed of an end cap and eight tapering panels. The taper is formed with 75 degree slopes, and three different techniques were used to mount the sloped panels at the different angles required.
The side panels are 6 x 12 tiles with details built up on the edge studs, attached to the side of the hull using click hinges.
The top and bottom panels were only slightly more complicated, attached to a vertical brick column using hinge bricks, which was in turn mounted on the technic frame using axle bricks.
The quarter panels were the hardest due to the odd angle at which they're canted. I ended up embedding this part in each panel and attaching them to knight/mecha rotation joint bricks, allowing me to adjust the angle in three axes of rotation while keeping them firmly in place.
The superstructure itself is very heavy and overengineered, a result both of the weight of the nose and engine, and of the way the project evolved over time. It is itself very heavy, though most of the weight of the MOC comes from nearly all of the hull being built out of brick walls instead of plates and tiles.

Getting the dorsal laserlances mounted at this angle was actually quite challenging, especially given the placement of the crew module.

Inside the crew module. The trans-smoke panel covering the rear chair is supposed to be a tactical HUD. I had planned to print stickers to add a display to it, but never got around to it.

Details are easier to see with the HUD removed, though I'd really like to pull the crew module out sometime, remove one of the walls, and get a good photograph of the inside.

Oh my. I am looking at the picture in my copy of the Terran Trade Authority Handbook and it is somewhat of a double take.
Masterful.
I have plans to recreate some "Sharks" and maybe a "Flea" or two myself. |

A testiment to the professional standards that can be attained with lego.
The ship is clean and built in an orderly fashion with great contours and colours. As clay stated before me, It really is a thing of beauty and its easy to see that an immense amount of effort and thought went into it's detailed construction - a truly fantastic creation that you have every right to be proud of. ;) |

The Hornet strikes me as somewhat large for a fighter, but you pulled off some really neat shapes here, and you did a great job with the scale given the ship's unusual shape. It took me a while to wrap my brain around how you pulled off the nose cone. Keep building, I look forward to seeing more of your work. |
