Late 1920s Art Deco style department store in downtown Detroit.
About this creation
I constructed this building to go with my 31 story David Stott Building. The real version of this building is directly east of the real David Stott. Unfortunately, it currently appears to be abandonded. Hopefully, as the central business district revitalizes, the structure will be restored. I especially like the Art Deco details on the top floor.
According to the book "Art Deco in Detroit", this was once the Colonial Department Store (you of course knew that if a book with just such a title existed that I would havit it!). I have not been able to find out any other information about this building.
I surmise that when the massive Hudson's department store (2nd largest in the nation at 2.2 million square feet) closed in 1982, that probably sent other nearby retailers into a financial tailspin as shoppers almost completely stopped going downtown.
As you can see the first floor of the building in its current empty state looks rather sad. In my Lego version, I had to reduce the width of the building so it would fit in the city block.
A view of some other structures that I constructed to fill up the block. In Detroit, the white buidling had been "modernized" in the post WW2 era with the entire 2nd and 3rd floors covered in panels which completely obscuring the windows. Vintage photos show a vertically oriented facade.
