ACCIPITER
You ever work on something for so long, you feel sad when you look back and think about all of the useful things you could have done with your time? Nah, me neither.
About this creation
Entry for Team “Bitter Solitary AFOL who wasn’t involved in the 2010 Moc Athalon” in the category “Does it Float?”
The answer:
No.

WARNING: mech-lovers, clonetards, and those of you who are easily put off by inappropriate innuendos should leave now. You will all be offended.

"A tank," you say?

Wrong. The ACCIPITER is not a tank. In fact it is an anti-tank. More precisely, it's an eight-wheel drive, 900 horsepower, particle-acceleration-powered, mech-slashing, rail cannon toting, long-range sniping, armor plating piercing, break-neck accelerating off-road demon straight from the underworld.

Yes, I know, it's just ABS plastic. Geesh, some people have no imagination. Enjoy.

Selectable firing modes are: single, double, and "Get-off-my-lawn-double-barrel-shotgun" mode.

NOTE: the last of aforementioned firing modes has not been certified "concussion safe" by the Interplanetary Committee on Unrealistic Firepower.

ALSO NOTE: While a gunner may be tempted to aggressively operate his canon during particularly exhilarating engagements, he should be warned to exercise restraint to avoid releasing the canon’s entire load too quickly, thus resulting in sub-par performance.

Initiate Attack Pattern "Crotch-Shot"!!

“Matt, we need to consider upping the flux capacitor’s activation speed to at least 130 miles per hour. Warping back to the 1950’s every time we move in for an attack is really putting a dent in our kill count.”

Hippogriff's-eye view

Chief Designer Jay-Z insisted on integrating what he referred to as “bootylicious curves” into the drive platform.

Build a vehicle with quadrasteer: easy.
Build a vehicle with paired suspension: piece of cake
Build a vehicle with quadrasteer AND paired suspension: OMFGBBQPIZZA HEADACHE!!

The ACCIPITER’s eco-friendly power plant runs on the world’s most abundant renewable energy source: customized LEGO clone troopers.

MEU-161-1 Anti-Armor: Thrashin' Mechs and Cashin' Checks.

Curtain call. Cue artistic darkened workbench shot.

EPILOGUE------------------------------------

An interesting statistic: The MT-1 took over a month to accumulate 21 ratings. The ACCIPITER had 22 within the first twelve hours.

What does this tell us: The bigger the guns, the better we like it.

This is a delicious treat for my eyes! I love the commentary and how you came up with that oh so clever power source! Hahahaha customized clones! It's probably all the chemicals in the sharpie ink that produces the power from the clones. Nice work!

Quoting Tom Simon After the next cracklink orders come in, I hope to delve into the fantasy military turf you have staked out so very well.
Yeah, yeah. Promises. :-) Stu's been chatting up pirate ninja mechs to go along with the theme for ages, and what do we have? No pirate ninja mechs, that's for sure. I'm glad though; you two have skill -- which means if you expand in to my niche, I'll be forced out for being revealed as the no-talent hack I am, and I'll be relegated to building Halo MOCs and Belville creations. Please, Tom. Don't make me build ponies. :-)

oh,a tank killer!,nice style!,the yellow band factory strikes again!i can imagine this thing rolling like thunder in a urban lanscape! rrroar!i really love this, reminds me of world war 2 german 8 wheelers, futuristic style! the suspension with rubber bands gives it a cool rolling feeling,i m sure, steering is also a nice addition, the presentation is refreshing, overall, a classic! suggestion?...a standard sized tank ,for comparison of scale,a military demonstration, a la iron man 1 ,the best pic [they re all very good] for me was in context! with troops deployed! if you could expand on this, you d complete the most impressive, and professional presentation work you did up to now! most excellent and imaginative work!

I'd make some witty comment about not needing tanks or mecha or something like that, but that would just leave me with overcompensating fighter craft and cargo planes. This is not a fun future for me. Anywho, this is an absolutely fantastic everything killer. I'd give both my legs to ride around in this baby! Also, I think warping back to the 1950s would significantly improve the kill count, as there's nothing that could stop you apart from the Iron Giant.

  March 26, 2010
Quoting Matthew David My problem, as a true Virgo, is that I'm obsessed with details.
Wasn't Virgo a vir... I won't go there... Lol-ish. Enough of that, so I'll say that You're definately right about the aesthetics of the vehicle. It's gotta look good, look realistic, and be functional all at the same time, which is pretty difficult to pull off.

Quoting Andrew Somers Thought that would be the response. XD anyhow, The steering is controlled by a gun that when turned from side to side turns the wheels. It's a 4-wheeler that has no quadsteer though. I didnt have any more steering components. :(
ill pass final judgement when i see it ;-) I came up with the plan for the system here very quickly - the OMFGBBQPIZZA headache part came while trying to build the body so as not to impede movement. The wheels have to turn and flex. Nothing too difficult, until you decide you're going to make them able to do so at the same time, and build the body around it so it doesnt get in the way but still has the "attitude" you're looking for. My problem, as a true Virgo, is that I'm obsessed with details.
  March 26, 2010
I like the turret and the sweet detail. And you just HAVE to make this into a NEO war MOC!

Quoting Matthew David I wasn't really going for an animal that it looks like. I was naming it after an animal it acts like. Its fast, smart, predatory, agile. that sort of thing.

Quoting Zylo ™ Well, I find their may have been more suitible titles for the anti-tank. Though you never want to go with the generic designation, and since accipiter is a rarely used name, it makes this unique. The only main relation to a raptor is really the coloration here, but the railguns also resemble the beak.

  March 25, 2010
Quoting Matthew David Accipiter may not be the most relatable animal to your design, but good work. Though I'm tired of AFOLs posting MOCs that offend or relate to inappropriate humor, it's MOCpages guys. Accipiter is the taxanomic nomenclature given to the family of raptors (predatory birds) that include some of the smallest, fastest, and most agile birds of prey. Sure, the ACCIPITER doesn't fly. But I saw several parallels that warranted the designation. Thanks for the input!

Quoting Andrew Somers I suddenly thought of two things looking at this again. One, I'm more jealous than a woman from the 1950's whose neighbor just got a new kitchen appliance. (relating to the 'I like its', of course.) And two, What type of suspension did you use? I'd love to see it.
double lmao. yeah, like i just got a nice new pea-green mixer! ha! Errm, about the suspension: oh man. I don't know where to begin...Actually, remember that "organized chaos" post i did a month ago? well there you saw the first 12 bricks in the drive platform/suspension system. I worked on that system all up until about errrr longer than i care to admit. so, needless to say, it's a bit complicated. in short: the wheels are paired (obvious to a brik-geneer like you). two paired wheel sets are mounted to two trucks, with a central tech pin set to pivot (again, obvious). completed assemblies are mounted to the underside frame buy way of two more central technic pins and turn tables are constructed. rubber bands through the center of the trucks, connected to the ends of each paired wheel assembly (suspension tension). rubber bands connect inside edge of rotating trucks to frame (steering tension). simple as that!

Quoting Zylo ™ Accipiter may not be the most relatable animal to your design, but good work.
Thanks for the input!

lmao. I am glad someone noticed the time i put into the actual soldiers. yes, those are kashyyyk trooper bodies (ironic, given the fact I blatantly mock clonies here), but, hey, what can I say. I loved the look of those torsos.

Thanks. I love that a couple people have mentioned Brain K's awesome DF theme, because his work was in fact a bit of the inspiration for my styling here. Also, I think just being mentioned in the same comment as him is quite humbling

I didn't see these kind of "vehicles, not tanks", since a long time and you're right about the headache scenario, I want to create a technic car with front wheel drive, but the prefabricated drivetrain axle parts are not made for front wheels to both drive and steer in a proper matter, because the axle does only turn maybe 35, 45 degrees in condition of front wheel drive. You created the "Accipiter: vehicle, not tank". Do you have any suggestion how to create a front wheel driven car that has front wheel steering that turns with a 90 degree angle, or maybe even 60 or 70? I'd like to have some comment about that on one of my creations, I'd be pleased. BTW: Nice masterpiece!
