Russia's response to Japan's MAS
About this creation
Entry for 2010 Mech Contest
Category: Exo-Force
After taking one look at the MAS-001, Russia's government scoffed, saying that "such a puny, weak, and pathetic looking mechanoid could never amount to anything". Russia then proceeded to create what they thought would be the ideal combat mech.
The NEHCM mk1 (Nuclear Exo-skeletal Humanoid Combat Machine mark I) is the result.
Unlike the MAS, the NEHCM is very "real robot"-esque.
As its name implies, it is powered by a miniature nuclear reactor. It can run for a full week before requiring a core dump and fuel rod change.
The NEHCM is piloted manually with help from a semi artificially intelligent Pilot Assistance System. To ease strain off of the pilot, the PAS can be assigned routines. For instance, the PAS could control the NEHCM and have it strafe in a given direction while the pilot focuses on attacking. Alternatively, the PAS can act like an "auto-aim" system, locking onto targets and calculating the best firing angle and timing so the pilot can actually hit the enemy.
There are issues with the PAS, however. For one, the PAS cannot be assigned a routine that is too complicated (such as targeting AND strafing). Also, the PAS will freeze up and cease functioning if it receives contradictory sensory data.
The standard weapons compliment for the NEHCM is:
- 8 under-shoulder mounted SAPHEI-L (Semi-Armor Piercing High Explosive Incendiary - Large scale) rounds
- 1 Guided "Bunker Buster" missile
- 1 Guided High Yield Shrapnel Bomb
- 2 SAM missiles
- 1 torso-top-mounted .50 caliber Gatling gun
- 2 arm-mounted EMP drop-bombs
- 1 Electromagnetic Rail Gun
- 1 .48 caliber armor-piercing rifle
Also, although only a prototype and still buggy, the NEHCMs have a limited Active Camouflage System that allows their armor to take on various patterns (the yellow is just a manufacturer default that makes them highly visible during test runs). Currently, it has 3 patterns: winter white, forest green, and desert tan. Note, the ACS cannot render invisibility cloaking although from a theoretical standpoint, it is possible.
Although the NEHCM is somewhat inferior to the MAS, it does have a couple of one-ups on it. For one, the fact that it uses conventional weaponry makes replacing and re-arming the NEHCM's weapons much easier and cheaper. Second, the NEHCM is a mass-production type unit unlike the MAS.
The RGDF (Russian Global Defense Force) is almost finished preparing a full 10 unit squad of NEHCMs. Japan has yet to complete a second MAS unit, although they have mentioned there is one in production.

The backside of the NEHCM. There are thrusters built into the backside of each leg but the NEHCM cannot fly. At best, it can hover a few feet off the ground. The thrusters are intended to aid in walking on uneven terrain.

Closeup of the back of the torso. The light grey cylinders are part of the nuclear reactor. The antenna is for communication.

Left side of the NEHCM, which is equipped with the .48 cal rifle, EMP drop-bombs and a Bunker buster on the shoulder.

Right side equipped with the HYSB and rail gun.

Closeup of the front of the torso. The cone-shaped parts on the sides are sensors as is the radar dish. The Gatling gun may seem a tad close to the cockpit but the cockpit is soundproof.

Cockpit open. The seats are actually quite comfortable leather. Just because you're piloting a giant robot on the battlefield, doesn't mean you can't be comfortable.

Takeshi at the controls. He's only scowling because he prefers the MAS to the NEHCM.

Sort-of-action pose!

Better shot of the .48 cal rifle with the EMP drop-bombs attached.

Without the drop-bombs

Better shot of the rail gun. It is a rail gun, it just has extra plate covering on the top and bottom.

Rail gun without its clip.

NEHCM with all of its weapons removed. The missiles are interchangeable however the rail gun and .48 cal rifle are side-specific.

The NEHCM's weapons.

The NEHCM compared to the MAS-001 Hub.ZX.
Creator's Notes
The Exo-Force Assault Tiger is by far one of my favorite models, however I've always found it to be "flawed" because a skinny and flimsy missile-rifle-thing and a buzz-saw do not make an "assault" mech. So, I fixed that.
Mainly, my inspiration behind creating the NEHCM was to have a polar-opposite mech to stand in contrast to my super-robot style Hub.ZX. Furthermore, I wanted to try my hand at more "conventional" weaponry and I think I did a pretty okay job for my first real attempt at guns.
Another thing I tried to do was stay within the realms of reality or plausible sci-fi although portable nuclear reactors and giant mechs are stretching it a bit ;P

This is very cool, you don't see too many yellow mechs. This pulls it off really well. I like it! |

Nice job. I have built a dark grey and dark blue wrestling mech based on the assault tiger, check it out if you have the time...

It certainly looks intimidating, but the legs look rather bland. As Mech Man said, this resembles the Assault Tiger too much. I like the armament though, and that will be enough for me to give you a 3, albeit a narrow one. |

yeah, a tad unrefined but still a very good build. 3 PTS. The legs remind me of those kangaroo pants kids use to wear in the 90's. |

I like the overall design, but the back of the MECH looked unfinished, and the presentation was on the poor side (the backdrop and table). However, still worth a 3 in my book. |

I like it, I really do. But this set copies the Original Exo force Assault tiger way to much. This only gets a two from me. |

This is beautiful Keith. Just beautiful. Mother Russia would be proud. It seems that you are attempting world domination, yes? |

I liked so much the improvements you did on Assault Tiger, it looks a thousand times menacing now and the armor is centuries ahead from the original set. Congratulations, you really did a excellent work here. |
