Turian Frigate
Turian frigate from Mass Effect
About this creation
I admit it, I have an unhealthy obsession with Mass Effect--especially with their art direction. This is a Turian frigate. It's a warship of reasonable size that makes up the bulk of the Turian fleet. Many of them can be seen in the game patrolling around the Citadel in the first game and being, um, "mishandled" at the end of the game. A couple busted up ones make a cameo in ME2 as well.

I tried to recreate the vessel reasonably faithfully given the limitations of my available parts and the medium. I worked from primary source which helped tremendously in reproducing many of the details. In particular, the angles of the engines and the wings don't easily come out in screen shots alone.

This is my first SHIP at around 160 studs stretching the tape at around 50" (just over 1 and a quarter meters for the metrically inclined). There are other large builds I want to do but I realized that I had exactly zero experience in designing large models.

This ship was chosen for its relatively straight lines and seemingly simple construction. "Seemingly simple" would be the key phrase here. Yes, there are long straight lines, but exactly zero of the sub-assemblies hanging off the keel are at 90 degree angles. Getting the shapes right wasn't difficult, but getting the attachment angles was markedly non-trivial.

The colors are slightly off. I didn't have orange pieces for the highlights and I swapped for maroon. Likewise, I also had to swap the blue-grey highlights to dark grey. There are also a couple well-chosen departures like the two-tone colors in the forward underhanging booms.

The model ended up being fairly sturdy. Despite lots of intricate attachments, I had no difficulty moving it from the living room to the dining area to photograph it. I wouldn't swoop it around the room, partially because it doesn't have any good handling points, but it's not likely to spontaneously fall apart either.

Mad props to Bioware for such a great series and some excellent starship design.

Who wouldn't? It's one of the best sci-fi series I've ever seen. Anyway, you've done a nice job of capturing the shape here. Especially impressive considering how background some of these ships are.
