The Brave Earth Brigade: DaiRayGar is a throwback to the old Super Robot genre anime of the 80s and 90s and an homage to my favorite of them all: Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
In the year 2012, the Earth came under attack by a mysterious alien race. For years, humanity fought against the countless waves of alien drones that swarmed the precious blue planet, and for years, humanity was barely managing to survive. With nothing much left to give in the fight for their lives, humanity turned to their greatest ace: the super robot DaiRayGar. Born a hybrid of the ultimate human technologies and the technologies salvaged from crashed alien drones, DaiRayGar was humanity's last hope.
DaiRayGar, like the Gunbuster, is a transformer-combiner. Two super machines, RG-01 SkyBird and RG-02 GeoDrive transform into the torso and legs of DaiRayGar respectively, and combine together.
In all honesty, I really wanted to make a transformer-combiner; however, due to time constraints and part limitations, this model is only an IAF (Imperfect Action Form) and cannot transform/combine. However, as a trade off, it has much better visual aesthetics and can be posed.
To better understand the IAF type model, think of those Transformer figures that don't transform. They're more detailed and easier to pose but they don't have alt modes.

I love how the "armor skirt" came out.
Back side. As per my building style, the backside is more "greebly" than the front side.
Zoom of the back. The trans-blue is the ion thruster that allows DaiRayGar to fly in space (and would allow SkyBird to fly in general). It doesn't have the power to allow DaiRayGar to fly in atmosphere though, although it can help slow atmospheric descent.
Zoom of the shoulder. Not much to say about them.
DaiRayGar is a bit back-heavy, so to keep it from tipping over, I built a stand for it. The stand isn't anything special, but at least I found a use for that base part from an old LEGO ISS model I've had (and since destroyed) for years.
Backside of the base.
DaiRayGar connected to the base. It can freely rotate 360 degrees on the base. That actually made finishing up the model a lot easier because I could spin it without worrying about knocking it over
What's a robot without weapons? DaiRayGar's shoulders each contain a missile rack. Each missile contains 50 smaller (but by no means weak) explosives. Using an advanced guidance system, not only can each missile be individual guided, but all of the inner explosives as well. Just one missile could devastate a small squadron of enemies. Creator's Notes
The missile racks don't actually fold into the shoulder. The panels have to be removed and the racks manually connected if you want them in "active" mode.
DaiRayGar's primary close combat weapon: the Ray-Striker. Basically, it's a cross between Wolverine's claws and a lightsaber or progressive knife. DaiRayGar has one on each forearm.
Another shot of the right Ray-Striker
The right Ray-Striker activated. You definitely do not want the business end of one of these.
Action pose! All weapons active!
DaiRayGar's "booster pack" can angle upward and downward for optimum thrust.
See that little grey pip at the bottom in front of the stand? That represents a human. DaiRayGar is a micro-scale model meaning in terms of theoretical size, it's my biggest model yet. Comparatively, it's about half to 3/4s the size of the Gunbuster.
Okay, I lied a little. DaiRayGar's legs can transform into GeoDrive if the inside armor of the lower legs is shifted down a stud.
Backside of the GeoDrive. Not much else to say
DaiRayGar was originally going to have several more weapons but they were scrapped for various reasons. Some of those weapons are: Ray-Saber - a giant electromagnetic saber. Scrapped because DaiRayGar's hands don't grip well. Hip Busters - more missiles pop out from under DaiRayGar's armor skirt, complementing the shoulder missiles. Scrapped because I lacked missiles and a good way to connect them. Ray-Smasher - DaiRayGar's lower wheels pop off, connect, and combine with a collapsible staff on its back to create a large hammer. Scrapped because it looked silly and left the legs looking weird Arm Busters - even more missiles pop out of DaiRayGar's forearms. Again, scrapped for the same reason as the Hip Busters
Although this model isn't "complete", I still like it a lot. I think I've definitely accomplished what I was going for and I'm happy with it. Perhaps some day I'll go back and redesign DaiRayGar or build another one that can transform.

Whoa, wait? If you can make his torso and legs form a vehicle... why not arms form a flying ship?
At the time, I really couldn't figure out a decent transforming torso so I compromised. Even now, I'm not entirely certain how to accomplish a transforming torso. Regardless, I'm definitely going back some day and rebuilding DaiRayGar the way it should be. Right now, however, I'm focusing on Project ZX and Project Mylv.
Very cool! I like that you built a mech that's an homage to early anime! I loved Voltron and Robotech as a kid (still do). I wish you would've had more time to make this a combiner or, at least, transformable. But, nonetheless, nicely done. Good luck:)
