GIMP Tutorial: How to make a white background
I realize that there are no physical LEGO creations in this (the main pic is computer-made), but if the mods would like me to remove it, please give me a little bit of time to spruce it up with some real legos :) Thanks!
About this creation

Start off by opening up your picture with GIMP.

Go to "Fuzzy Select" and move the Threshold to 30.0 and the Feather edge to 2.0

Click on part of the background

Now go to "Bucket fill" and click on "BG color fill"

Click in your selection and voila, your background is white!

Now go back to "Bucket fill" and this time click on "Pattern fill".
NOTE: In order to use your own background you will need to insert your picture at C:\Documents and Settings\Chip-philson\.gimp-2.6\patterns

Click in the white selection and you have a picture background.

Last but not least go to "File" and press "Save". Your work is completed!

Thanks Flare! Really helpful. I'd had a go with the fuzzy select before but not got the whole image selected correctly - but I was trying to select the image, not the background. I'll give this a try when I get home tonight!

Quoting Shadow X Nice. But what is GIMP, and how can I get it? (It better be free)
GIMP.org -- it costs nothing, and is availible for Windows and Mac and maybe Linux.

Quoting Commander Le (Vince) Can you e-mail me the "Comic Life" serial code for Deluxe? I need a program that can do that!? It might sound absurd, but me is desperate! Or you can just leave this comment alone. I can't believe I have the gut to say this to you...
That is completly illegal. I would never give it to anyone.

Thanks for the tips! I've used these in my past 2 MOCs and they're really working great for me, thanks!
  May 18, 2010
Also, when I add a background, how do I display it in the original size? The thing keeps placing the background in tiny chunks...
  May 18, 2010
I need to take "home" pictures and place a formal background, because I'm making a campaign poster. Will the thing work with separating the original background with my HAIR? Please reply Asap.

Quoting Legoteen 1138 Does this work if my original background is not paper? Like the inside of a shelf, box, etc.?
If the background and actual creation are different colors, and you have adequate lighting, it shouldn't matter.

Quoting Jonathan Ladner Thanks, i tried it, but sometimes it either only chose part of the object of the object and the backround, and sometimes when filing the backround with a color it wouldnt fill the entire backround, help?
Make sure that your MOC and your background are signifcantly different colors. If your MOC is white and your background is white you're going to have LOTS of problems. :P. I think I might've forgotten to mention one thing, when you are in the bucket tool screen, go to the bottomish part and click fill in whole selection. That should fix it! :D
