July 15, 2005:
My favorite wooden pencil is made by Dixon Ticonderoga. It is their traditional yellow painted wooden pencil with the green text and an eraser that works really well. They use a high quality "lead" that just feels right when you are using the pencil. You can imagine how excited I was when I came home the other day to find that my second daughter, who is seven years old, had made one out of LEGO elements. I asked her to tell me the story of how she decided to make this model and this is what she said:
I was walking around my bedroom when I stepped on a pencil. I suddenly got the idea to make one from LEGO. I began at the writing tip of the pencil and worked my way back to the eraser. The reason my eraser is kind of small is because it is partly used, just like the pencil I copied. My dad helped me a little bit by giving me some suggestions. He suggested that the tan part near the tip should be made in an up-and-down pattern to give it the "sharpened" look. He also suggested that I look a little closer at my real pencil and try to make some "words" on my version. I also added to the pencil's length because of his advice.
I hope you like looking at my pencil as much as I enjoyed making it!
