They all moved out of the armory and after one final look at Forrel, moved away back into the corridor that lead to the huge hall. But this time, instead of everywhere being deserted, there were people running about all over the place. There were so many troops everywhere that the squad just merged into the crowd and weren’t noticed. Once they got to the corner where they had stood earlier looking into the hall, they stopped and leaned against the wall, troops still rushing past them in both directions.
“They must have realized we’re here!” Blast called to his men over the racket. “Ready?”
Everyone nodded. “Go go! FIRE!” Blast yelled and the U.R.S. squad charged out into the hall. “SUCK LASER!”
“THERE THEY ARE!” he heard someone yelling. “SHOOT THEM!” was what was shouted next, and that was when the hall turned into a battleground. Lasers flew everywhere interspersed with bouts of flame from Vasilious’s flame-thrower. Luckily the hall was full of crates and so the U.R.S. members ducked and dived behind them, slowly making their way across the room.
Blast fired a triple shot then span and crouched down behind one of the boxes. He looked to his left as Sator did the same to the crate a few meters from him.
“I’m going to join you!” the medic shouted across.
“No don’t!” R.K. shouted back. He knew he wouldn’t make it across, even if he did there wasn’t enough space behind the crate for both of them.
“I’m coming!” Sator shouted and prepared to run.
“DON’T! THERE’S NO ROOM!” Blast yelled but the medic took no notice.
“Here I come!” Sator called.
“NOOOO!” Blast screamed as the U.R.S. medic leapt up and attempted to dash across the gap but precisely half way across he was suddenly riddled with bullets and dropped to the floor dead. Blast turned his head away, unable to look at the body but it was lucky he did because suddenly a detonator rolled to a stop beside him.
He gasped and leapt up, jumping through the air in a diving position as the bomb exploded behind him.
He crashed to the floor behind the next crate along, his arms next to his head.
He winced but then a bleeping sound accompanied by a flashing red light came from his wrist.
He looked at the clock.
Thirty seconds until detonation.
“Oh…” Blast started to curse as he knelt up behind the crate.
“Thirty seconds!” he shouted to the scattered squad then leant up on top of the crate and fired multiple rounds at the F.I.S. troops.
He crouched back down again, took a deep breath then leapt up and charged for the exit, firing his machine gun with one hand as he ran.
“Come on! Get out of here!” he shouted at Zak who had just stood up and was firing repeatedly at the enemy.
“Aargh!” Zak screamed as he was shot down, right in front of Blast. Blast tripped over the body and stumbled forwards then fell to all fours.
He scrabbled across the floor a few feet to a small pile of boxes and hid behind them. He checked the timer.
“BLAST!” Hess shouted as he charged past. The U.R.S. leader leapt up and followed him. Then Padfoot joined their charge.
All three continued to fire as they ran. “Don’t forget me!” Jelli called as she too ran with them.
Blast overtook Hess just as his wrist bleeped fourteen seconds remaining.
“GO GO GO!” Shock screamed at them as both he then Vasilious joined the back of the squad.
Then they had reached the exit tunnel.
“MOVE!!!” R.K. bellowed to them all as they raced down the ice tunnel. The F.I.S. troops were following them, still firing.
But then at the very back of the squad Vasilious started to slow down then stopped and turned to face the enemy.
“Everyone with me?” Blast called over his shoulder to them all then turned to look back while running backwards and saw Vasilious. “VASILOUS!!!”
The U.R.S.’s technician’s expert gave a last smile under his helmet, then pulled the trigger on his flame-thrower, just as Blast’s wrist bleeped five.
