Yes, this is a real Lego ship, in a real, unaltered glass bottle.
About this creation
I had been planning on building this for several years. I finally decided I'd better build it already
before someone made another first. I planned out the design of the ship over the course of a couple weeks, taking it apart, and rebuilding many times. in the design process I wasn't too concerned about how difficult the model would be to build inside a bottle; I figured if anything came up, I'd find some way around it. The major concerns were: making it look realistic, using entirely pieces small enough to fit through the neck of the bottle (a 2x2 brick is too large), and keeping the whole model small enough to fit in a bottle.
Once I was satisfied with my design, I set about constructing it inside the bottle. I started using simply a bent coat hanger to manipulate pieces inside the bottle. My arsenal of tools later increased to a pair of chopsticks, which are extremely rigid and wouldn't bend when I needed to attach pieces sideways; and some support wires from
a lamp I own. Without a doubt, the masts were the hardest part to attach. They were difficult to hold, and when attached filled the entire height of the bottle. Many times I would have them almost attached, slip, and have to start over.

I just finished building my 4-wide Lamborghini built in a bottle. I have to admit the bottleneck of my bottle was wider, but now I understand how difficult that must have been for you! Thanks for the inspiration! :-)) |

Unbelievable how you managed this! There were times when people assembled the tiny creator sets still in the bag - codswallop compared to this! Cheers, Jens |

Thanks to everyone who has left comments so far. I thought I'd reply to a few of them:

Have you thought of a name for the Ship?
No, I have no name for the ship as of yet, but I may come up with one at some point, especially if I ever try this again.
Quoting Gerry Lennox
Bam! I'd be amazed if I could build anything at all after polishing off a whole bottle of Disaronno.
I don't think I could either, haha.
Quoting Henrik Hoexbroe
I'll abstain from guessing what you do in your professional life, but I have a specific idea... lol
I have absolutely no experience in traditional Ship-in-a-bottle making, if that's what you're getting at. I'm still a student, actually, in physics and mathematics.
Quoting Nick Barrett
That must have given a few hours of frustration but it was well worth it.
More than a few, and I would take long breaks from building when it became more frustrating. |
