My collect as of the middle of 2010. When you start to collect, everything just goes into one box. As your lego grows you find yourself spending longer trying to find the pieces you need, this is where most people don't know what to do. Their is no right or wrong way to store your lego, just know what your needs are and store them accordingly. I started to put all the same bricks into their own boxes regardless of what colour it was, but I found that when I wanted specific colours I had to sought them out again. As the collection grew I put in their own boxes:- all the plates, roof tiles, windows and doors, wheels, technical, odd bits, etc..... As you get even more you can start and split pieces up again,ie. your roof tiles can be put into different boxes, ie, roof tiles, inverted tiles, odd curves, you can go on and on. Also my plates have been split up into; 1x1, 1x2, 1x3, 1x4, 1x6, 1x8+, and the; 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, together. Ok I could go on all day here so I shut up and let you look at what I've got so far.

Plates made easier to find.
Roof pieces split up.
You can store lego many ways. The best way I think is having your own room and big see through drawers, but you need money and space. I have to put away my lego after building, so this at the moment serves its purpose. Hope this helps and even if you use a small part of what I said, its been worth it.
Storage is essential! I'm lucky enough to have a LEGO den, all mine! It's a disaster area right now, as I'm busy sorting a HUGE tub I bought off a kid. Piles of every color, scattered everywhere. If I ever get it organized, I'll have to post some before and after shots. Nice collection, BTW.~H
