These Mosaics were created in the Build Your Own Lego Mosaic workshop at Brickworld 2010, which I lead. In the workshop, attendees learned the basics of studs-out mosaic design using the GIMP, an open source image editing program similar to Photoshop. Attendees also learned numerous methods for improving the final result, and how to create instructions. The attendees then set about designing and building their own mosaic on 32 x 32 baseplates using the basic colors, along with light and dark grey, orange, and lime green.
This is the first time I have run a workshop, and I am extremely pleased with the results. Five attendees who did not have laptops sent images to me ahead of time so they would still be able to build, but the others did everything during the workshop. So from a roomful of brick-lovers who had never before designed a mosaic, we produced 12 spectacular designs from scratch and built 17 in just 3 hours!
This workshop will be run again at Brickworld 2011 and is available to full registrants. Space is limited.
