About this creation
There are a LOT of pics here and I’m only doing one post. Some of the pics I will just be posting without commentary to go along with them. The ones that need it however, will have it. Now then, on with the show!
Thursday morning… June 17th, 2010. A day that will live in infamy!
We gathered in the lobby at around noon and piled into cars for our annual LegoLand Discovery Center outing. Picking out all the faces I can in this shot from left to right, Lee Jones (with his AWESOME kids Maddie and Dano in the front), Mark Kelso, Stacy Sterling and Lee’s wife Danette. In the background are a few others including Dave Sterling and George Kemper.

We arrived at LegoLand about a half hour later. Here’s Kelso, Kemper, Marianne Asu… Asunami? Asuyammi? And Scott and Trina (ARGH! Can’t remember their last name Yeap, They’re all gonna kill me.)

But first, LUNCH! We avoided Chipotle this year for Dennis’ sake and went with a sandwich shop.

Storming the gates!

Kelso kept TRYING to tell me that he dropped that thing by accident.

But we all know the REAL reason. He dropped that thing like 14 times!

“Dr. Feelgood” here doing what he does best. Lee Jones holds the world record for quickest dropped “trou” at .46 seconds.

Inside LegoLand’s first exhibit. A complete recreation of the Chicago Lakefront.

Oh my, who’s that overlooking the city?

Oh never mind, it’s just Dave Kaleta…

Kelso’s reaction when he saw that he was sitting next to me on the dragon ride. Poor guy.

Some of you may think this is a joke, but Lee is actually looking in to purchasing a machine to make Lego brick. For the record… No, this is not a joke and from what he told me MAN are those machines expensive!

We’ve done enough Legoland posts in the past so we’ll move on back to the convention…
Saw this when we got back to the hotel.

Never found out who did it but thought it was funny.

The rest of Thursday was spent with setup. See Heath Flor’s post for a little more coverage on that.
Friday…
Had a small outing to my house in the morning with Dennis, Kelso and Kaleta to pick up my Communication Universal Networking Transponder (that needed to actually be held on the drive so it didn’t fall apart). Kelso was violated by a genie and we got lunch while we were out so it was a win win for everyone!
Dave Kaleta showing why he’s not allowed back at veterinary conferences anymore. (thanks for help with the repairs Dave!)

George Kemper and Mark talking with Bryan “Eggypop” Hanley! Eggy was only able to make it for Friday, but it was really cool to meet him in person. Hope he can come back and stay longer next year.

Heath’s courthouse… NICE!

Kelso with Joe Meno.

6,200…

Let me repeat that for the sake of poor Danette who (along with myself and a few others) was forced to put weapons in the hands of nearly every one of them. Six thousand… Two hundred. Dr. Jones has been taking lessons from Nike and Martha Stewart when it comes to sweatshop slave labor.

All the way from Billasomethingorother Australia boys and girls, it’s I Scream Clone! Josh is a WAY cool dude! Will someone get to work on a transporter so the guys that live overseas can get here more often please.

Josh’s (I scream clone) layout.

Dave Sterling being the awesome dude he is.

Project X, the Matrix by George Kemper. I don’t know exactly how many of us contributed to this layout, but it turned out REALLY nicely. And yes, we already have a project X for 2011 in the works that’ll blow this one out of the water!

Welcome, to Jurassic Park.

Quantas has the unique distinction of being the only airline to have never crashed… guess they shoulda told the guys handling this moc that. This moc suffered damage on the trip and had to have a lot of repair work done when they arrived. The good news is not only did they get it fixed, but the guys who built it got free airfare from Australia to here because of it! (just for building it mind you, not because it was damaged… that was an added bonus)

Twin lug layout.

They told me that this maze on the twin lug layout actually has a solution. Feel free to figure it out on your own time, I’m too lazy. Great idea though!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Oz!

The next few pics don’t have words cool enough to describe it. So in a rare occurrence, I’ll just shut up.

Dave Xandegar! And that brownish blur in the background is Legohaulic!

Speaking of Legohaulic… His and Nannan’s award winning layout! Totally deserved it too! I mean… using PAB cups IN your build? Who thinks of stuff like that? Awesome job guys!

Scott and Trina here with their award winning trains! Congrats guys and congrats on the (soon) new FOL addition to the family!

The man, the myth, the legend, the smack that is… Goldman, seen here with the missing man tribute for Nnenn.

And my contribution to the tribute. Rest in peace Nate.

May I present, Dave Kaleta’s “Best Mega Creation” award winning Batcave. The entire inside of the mansion is furnished. Most people didn’t get to see that and it STILL won the award. Just shows how cool this thing really is! Congrats Dave, you TOTALLY deserved it!

For the next few shots, I’ll just let you enjoy some of the creations on display.

Friday night. I had to work on Friday, but they let me out early so I could get to the in store event!

I was still a little late, but thanks to Lee I scored a Grand Emporium (thanks Lee!) and was able to pick up three other sets as well.

Had to drive for an hour through torrential a downpour, but I think it was worth it.

Saturday morning. First public day! To give you an idea of just how MANY people there were, this was the line at about 11am, an hour after they opened the doors.

Adam Tucker’s fully operational roller coaster!

It would be so cool to be minifig scale right now.

ZOOM!

An overall shot of the coaster. He’s going to redo this thing for next year bigger and better! Can’t wait Adam!

Ryan Rubino ladies and gentlemen! His name isn’t that big on mocpages anymore but rest assured, this man is Lego Royalty!

Kaleta decided to install interior lighting inside the mansion.

And we did what we could to help. Hey Dave… NICE!

This is probably the ONLY better use for a PAB cup than the one Nannan came up with.

One of these things is not like the other, one of these things is not the same. When I put this fig on Lee’s Matrix layout his reaction was something along the lines of “What the %*#&? What the %* is that thing on my moc?” We got a good giggle out of that one.

Sunday Morning…
This weekend went by WAY too quick. Here I am trying to ward off Lee with an apple. I hear it those work on doctors pretty much the same way garlic works on a vampire. Yes I used that joke before, but it’s still funny dangit!

Open the gates and unleash the public hordes! No Lee, I said horDes... go back to what you were doing.

Kelso: “I seeeee youuuuu…”

Kaleta and Josh (I Scream Clone).

A cheerleader about to take the plunge on my log ride. Insert bad pun joke here.

She was a REAL busy girl. But it made her so happy.

Kaleta and Heath’s lovely wife Amber.

And speaking of Heath… finally got him to stand still long enough to get a pic. Dude… you’re here for a Lego convention, not sightseeing!

Lee’s army became the hangout for much of the convention. Here’s a few of us in the final hour of the show… sniff.

They cleared out the hall at 4 and it was time to start tearing down.

I don’t have the 400,000 part collection of most AFOLs, so for me, I just toss everything in a tub and sort it when I get home. Kelso got the honor of the first toss. Take a wild guess which moc he was most attracted to.

And he even found some creative uses for the wreckage.

Not sure where he was going with this one. I find it safer not to ask.

Kemper throwing in the building I did for his Matrix layout.

Wow, it’s almost like bullet time with this pic. Now all I need to do is figure out how to pan here…

Heath took the next one.

And even after I let him do this, he wouldn’t let me do it with his courthouse. How’s that for gratitude?!??!

Even Dennis’ daughter Kelsey…

…and the good Mr. Price got in on the action.

George took a play out of my book for his own builds.

Stacy was actually scared to join in on this.

I thought the poor girl was going to start crying when she dropped the house I made for their layout in there.

Left to right. Kelso, Kemper, Jones, Stacy in front (wonder why Lee chose THAT spot? Oh right, he was the smart one, forgot), Heath, Dave Sterling, some bum from off the street and Dennis Price.

And you people thought that SigOcean was dead… He’s alive and well and in the hands of Dennis Price (may god have mercy on SigOcean’s soul).

Kaleta accepting his award for the Batcave! I can’t say this enough. Dave, YOU FREAKIN ROCK!

The final shot of the tub. Believe it or not, I’ve already got about half of this sorted!

After tear down, I picked up my wife and daughter and had dinner with the Jones’. Despite herself, my wife ACTUALLY had a good time!

Fourth wall commentary: This post was long enough as it is, so I’ll be brief. It really is like a family reunion at Brickworld. I miss you all terribly already and can’t wait for next year! Take care everyone!
~Chris.

Chris,
I sent this to the head of
THE BRICK LIFE
today, March 29, 2012
Inger,
You could be a big help for an American Family whose adult daughter is missing.
She was a top MOC designer.
Please go to this link and read about it.
I'd love to see you post it!
The more coverage the family could get
maybe the quicker HEATHER can be found!
God bless you for your help.
I am childless and a retired teacher!
I am hoping since your is PARENT oriented item
you will both understand and empathize with this sad situation!

I hope she posts it and I hope it helps!
Nick
My heart is broken over this, I wanted to be a father so bad my wife and I separated over the fact she could not have any children, being a teacher and taking charge of others' kids you could only imagine how I wanted my own. I feel for her parents and relatives! |

I freaked out a the castle, the roller coaster, and the bley and yellow space station. Oh, also at the guys freakin' HUGE army, the Ferris Wheel (Wow...The Grand Carousel is like a dot...), and Nannan Z./Legohaulic's "Containment". I saw the Batcave earlier on MOCpages, and I agree. TOTALLY deserves the award. Where was BrickWorld held? |

It was great to see everyone and sorry if Stacy and I were running around all the time. It was such a busy week with so much to do!
