Cora The Great White
About this creation
You may wonder why you can´t find a realistic shark made with bricks. I didn´t find this very strange because of the daunting task of shaping a reallife animal with all its round, flowing and smooth surfaces. So with great confidence I started designing a 1:5 scale great white shark. I present this bad girl in LDD snapshots with the brick outlining option. Please rate and comment if you like Cora!

2907 parts used (original 5213 parts before the parts efficiency project). The parts limitation is mainly a result of implementing a hollow core frame. The exterior got a makeover making it less cluttered, without affecting the overall body shape. Cora is 115 cm in length (144 studs), 60 cm wide (74 studs), and 100% studless.

The outer shell was the first thing I designed, then the hollow core frame was created inside the existing space of the outer shell making sure to get sufficient structural cohesion.

The nose.

The right pectoral fin. Attached to the body with locking hinges.

The dorsal fin.

We also have the caudal fin...nicely shaped!

The long curvy body turned out well enough.

Estimated weight: Around 10 Ib.

I just love her muscular back from this angle...the perfect aquatic predator.

Belly of the beast!

The jaws.

Quoting Mike Johnson Very well planned out and should be quite the accomplishment when done in brick form. Now to make her really stand out, turn this beastly beauty into an intergalactic battlecruiser with all the weapons popping out of hidden hatches. Also the mouth could open to reveal a fighter launch bay or perhaps a planet-killer weapon! Just a thought for our GAIA comrades.
LMAO! Now, why didn´t I think of that?! And the many hundreds of starfighters will obviously be in the shape of hungry shark babies, helmed by...sharks! ;) Wicked idea :D

Quoting Daniel Brilliant Making a shark is a bold idea and pushes lego to its boundaries since it is such a round organic shape. The amount of bricks involved is pretty intense and the patience involved in doing something this big in LDD is something I can appreciate.
It was even more bold because I really didn´t have the necessary skills 2 years ago. I had to invent all by endless trial and error. I´m still working on the number of parts needed. As for now I have shaved off 200 parts from the original 5213 without affecting the exterior in a bad way.

Quoting Eragon Bromson Its amazing, could you make a LLD tutorial on how you made the body's curves? There are absolutely no gaps in on the skin, i never seen anything like it before. x>5/5
I´ll consider making a tutorial in the future. It´s really a matter of working with segmented circular sections of various diameters. Because of the use of circles you get a basic skin without gaps and relatively good flowing curves. Can be adapted for any fish design.

Quoting Ape Fight An epic build (well, not build as it's LDD but you know what I mean). It looks a bit sleek for a Great White, perhaps it's more a Reef Shark, but nevertheless it's a wonderfully skilled creation. 5 stars
You´re correct, it´s a bit sleek...I´ve been looking into that. But I have actually seen some specimens that are very long and sleek. So the plan is to build it as it now appears on the page. Based on what I now know I´m working on templates of a 6 foot great white, which will turn up on my page in the future. This version will be much more massive around the middle-section and look more like the ones you think of.

Quoting Ryan Rubino I'm not attempting to give offense. I think my critique was far too vague. I simply meant that I believe that the trunk of the tail tapers too quickly and too much from what I see in your overhead view which is not a factor of scale. Oversimplified was a poor choice of words and a product of me being to lazy to explain myself properly.Just an observation of having looked at so many photos and models of them. I know the difficulties of sculpting animals from Lego regarding scale and parts limitations. Believe me I see many flaws and limitations in my models that i just couldn't seem to overcome and others may notice some I hadn't considered. My intentions were to provide my own personal insight and not just dole out the boilerplate "awesome!" Overall an excellent model of a difficult subject matter. Ryan
Actually that´s a good observation...I have some things I could choose to change. It´s really a question of what kind of photos you choose as your template. Obviously there is a great variety of different shapes and angles. My shark is a result of not just one but several great whites, to give it a more personal appearance. So in a way I have combined a lot of different characteristics, thereby it gets a different but still realistic look from a certain point of view. Without seeing any flaws there can only be superlatives, which is not very useful. Sculpting animals is an art I would say, maybe that´s because you just don´t find a lot of them here. It takes a bit more skill and patience.

Quoting Ryan Rubino Beautiful rendering of the White Shark. The shapes look really good my only critique would be the that the trunk of the body from the dorsal fin to the caudal fin looks oversimplified in shape. The Great White has been a project I've been considering for a long time. Will you brave the expense and build it? What is the length of this model if realized? Excellent job and I hope you will continue building organic forms in the future.
If you try building a shark in this scale you will become painstakingly aware that no part is oversimplified to design. On a larger scale (than 1:6), it gets easier to find a greater shape, but the expenses will grow astronomical which isn´t very realistic for most people to afford. I didn´t hesitate a single second, taking on this challenge! And yes, it will certainly be built asap. The exact length of this MOC is 108,8 cm. Thanks for your attention!
