So some time later, the situation had been explained to both armies and later on that night, Blast and Jamie met up to work out a plan of action.
A strategy was agreed on and then repeated to the troops involved and at dawn next morning the U.R.S. and F.I.S. leaders, bar Fixer who was recovering in the medical center back on The Desolation, along with a select few troops gathered in the room where Iadsgb had vanished, with all the equipment they would need.
“Everybody’s here Blast.” Shock said as they stood around waiting. Ever since the last mission on Hoth, Shock had become a valued member of the U.R.S..
“Very well.” R.K. looked out over the harbour towards the frozen ocean to the horizon where a deep red sun had just appeared, sending beautiful patterns of light across the ice. “Ready Jamie?”
“I suppose so.”
“Right. O.K. Everyone! Lets go!” Blast called to them and as one they shuffled forwards towards the ice wall. Clamps and winches were set firmly into the floor and everyone in the team was attached to one of three long metal cables.
The cable ends were then joined to the winches and one by one the three long lines of troops walked into the ice and disappeared.
Nobody knew what to expect when they went through and so when the ground suddenly gave way and became a vertical rock wall and they had to abseil down it into the darkness with only their headlights to aid their sight, they weren’t exactly surprised.
As they bounced down the rock-face on their cables, their torches flashed around the new environment and revealed where they were.
They were in a medium sized cavern with rock walls that stretched up about sixty feet before curving over to form a stalactite-covered roof. It would have been pitch black if it weren’t for the troops head-torches and the glowing florescent crystal formations dotted all around. There was a large tunnel that Blast guessed was around fourteen feet tall off to their left as they descended facing the wall.
Blast’s feet touched the rocky ground and he unclipped himself from he cable. He shone his torch around and took everything in. Clift landed next to him and also unclipped himself.
“Well, I can’t see Iadsgb anywhere.” He said.
“He must have gone down there. It’s the only exit at ground level.” Blast pointed to the tunnel.
“Then that’s where we’re going.”
They waited for the rest of the troops to unclip and then moved away into the tunnel.
As they walked, their torches flickered around the tunnel, revealing it to be covered in ice and in places, to be completely made from it. The men, and Jelli, were provided extra light by the glowing crystal formations that were dotted all over.
“Is it just me or is the tunnel getting bigger?” Falcon asked as he looked around. They had been walking for around ten minutes now and were continuously pushing into the unknown, looking for any signs of Iadsgb and now up ahead, the tunnel appeared to widen, grow taller and give more light.
“Whoa!” everyone gasped and gaped in awe as they reached where the tunnel grew brighter.
They were standing at the edge of an enormous cave that was easily twice the size of the cavern they had entered on the cables. But that wasn’t what made it so spectacular. What did that, was the fact that it was coated in millions of crystals and other precious stones. Floor to ceiling was just glowing treasure. The room shone in a brilliant white light, emanating from all around and the light from one crystal would bounce off another and magnify the intensity. Crystal stalactites hung down from the ceiling and the reverse stuck up from the ground. The floor had a gentle slope up to the right and there was a small circular frozen pond in the middle. At the opposite side from where the team stood now, was a vertical sheet of thick ice about the same size as the tunnel they had just come from.
“It’s beautiful.” Jelli commented as they all wandered amongst the crystals. Some of them towered way above even the tallest members of the group.
They all continued to gaze at the dazzling beauty and moving around inbetween them but then…
“Um… Guys?” Stallion called and Blast walked over to him.
Stallion pointed to just behind a large crystal and Blast realized there was a human skeleton wedged there. He frowned.
“Bones!” Blast spun round as Jelli’s shout came from the other side of the room.
“And here!” Hess called from a few meters from Blast.
“Here too! Callum shouted. More shouts came from all around and everyone’s awe turned into fright. Blast scrabbled through the crystals and ice, looking wherever the shouts were coming from.
“Iadsgb!” Jelli screamed from the far side of the cave by the vertical ice wall.
R.K. charged over to her and put his hands flat against the ice and looked through.
Sure enough, sitting behind the ice on the ground, resting his head in his hand was the F.I.S. leader Iadsgb.
