About this creation
The XP-38 Sky Viper is a Vic Viper type sky fighter that I built in May 2010 for the Brickworld 2010 Vic Viper Fly-In in honor of the late nnenn. This was my first attempt at building a Vic Viper and I am actually really happy with the way it turned out.

My design is supposed to be reminiscent of a WW-II fighter aircraft and I envisioned something like a cross between a P-38 Lightning and a Rostock F2B Sanka Mk. B from the movie ‘The Sky Crawlers’. I also took some design cues from the XP-55 Ascender built by Curtiss-Wright Corporation in the 1940’s.

The XP-38 Sky Viper features contra-rotating three-blade pusher props that are spun using Pratt & Whitney R-2800 WASP engines pumping out 2,800 hp each. Each engine features a turbo-supercharger arrangement allowing power to be maintained to over 44,000 ft.

Fuel is standard AVGAS 115/145 and allows operations at up to 65 inHg without damage to the engine. The XP-38 can also carry enough fuel for a four hour patrol stint. In-flight refueling capability is still in development but should be available by late-2010.

This engine arrangement allows maximum level speeds of 550+ mph to be achieved with a cruise speed of 408 mph. Rate of climb is around 6,000 fpm and roll rate is 120° per second.

The XP-38 has a simple armament. Shown here are the two 50 cal cannons on mounted on the top of the wings. Additional hard-points and weapons mount stations are available and the XP-38 can be configured with most available fighter weapons systems.

Cooling for the engines is achieved by a large radiator mounted on the rear of the aircraft. Airflow is directed to the engines and to the radiator via the large air scoop mounted underneath the fuselage.

The XP-38 Sky Viper has a crew of one pilot who must undergo over 100 hours of training to learn to fly this beast of a fighter. Rest assured if you pilot this aircraft…it will be unlike anything you have ever done before.

Thanks everyone for checking this one out. It's sad that it took something like nnenn's passing to kick me to do some Sci-Fi work, but I really enjoyed building this and will be looking to do more stuff like this in the future.

It would be great to have this Vic Viper in our group "Vic Viper Owners Club". We want to collect as many Vic vipers as possible in this group. Would you please be so kind and add it? :-))

Fantastic job mashing past and future together and achieving such a fine piece of aerial machinery. The red/yellow checkered nose really made it stand out in the 'Missing Man' fly-in.~H

unclassifiable but excellent! I couldn´t guess whether it is a ww2 plane, a post apoc one, a steampunk one...it is great anyway. Congratulations.

Very nice, sir. And a fitting MOC-morial at that. You've combined looks, technique, and style into a purely amazing creation. Though, as a student of history, I must point out that there was an XP-38 already; later to become the P-38 Lightning. Still, great job!

So you made this one. I was looking at several pictures of the display, and this particular one caught my attention. Wonderful job on this build. Not only is it a very well made craft, but it's also an excellent tribute. Great work.

Wow thats really neat. At first I wasnt sure if I really liked the checker pattern on the front, but now I'm sure I do. I also saw a picture of the brickworld display of these, really neat designs by the other people also.

Oh so THIS is what came out that made Luke's land speeder "not in demand." Wow... that was one of those obscure Star Wars references that truly show what a nerd I am. I loved seeing this thing at BW Dave. Not only was it an exceptional build but also a great addition to the tribute. ~ Chris.

Quoting Wes Pitter Very nicely done. The color scheme just pops out at me. I like the nose in particular, and the classic inspiration was well assimilated in your design. Does it balance on its wings?
Nope. It's got a stand that it sits on that attaches just aft of the air intake scoop on the bottom. I cropped that out of the pictures though. The stand is made using one of the tall monorail supports.

Sky Crawlers was a GREAT movie! I loved how realistic everything looked. I must admit it was a bit slow at times, but the aerial action was amazing! Oh yeah, I cause your Sky Viper is ok too. :P I got to see it in person, so everyone else can be jealous! Neiner, neiner!
