As you may or may not notice, Tatras are very common in the technic world for its untypical suspension design and its own advantages.
So after seeing so many mocs of them, and especially from my favorites builders I decided to try build one and see by myself how does it really is.
About this creation
At first, I saw Zblj’s mini tatra 8x8 and wanted to build something like that but since the only balloon tires I have are the 94mm, I had to do it in a bigger scale. Luckily Nico71 had just posted his own a week ago, so I intended to do something similar; and to be honest the first time I saw it didn't really believe that the half bevel gears could hold so much torque.
So I started by building a prototype to how the suspension would perform, after that I remain with the axles build a new chassis and add a steering system, later after testing it I made minor changes and build the cabin.
A fast building compared to my last moc, the Dakar Actros, just in 3 days it was ready.
About this moc, it has 2 pf medium motors for driving with a 1:16 gear reduction and 1 pf medium motor for the steering with a 1:2.5 gear reduction.
I’m not really sure about the scaling or proportion on this moc because I got lazy and just build the cabin until it look like the pictures.
Just as an advice from my testing, it may be different for you, one half bevel 12 tooth gear meshed with a 12 tooth regular gear in a perpendicular way can hold enough torque to stall one medium motor with a 1:3 reduction.
Before I added the cabin and therefore add more gear reduction, the drive train could stall the engines without damaging the gears but now it only can stall the motors if all the wheels stop at the same time.
There are some drawback in this moc, first because my steering isn't perfectly straight when going backwards the front suspension gets down; then, I think this is something particular of this kind of suspension, the lateral stability isn't pretty good.
To be honest before building this moc i didn't like the idea of swinging half axles, it just seems to me to easy and useless because the angles of the wheels with the road will change; but now i think its a very clever and also reliable way because of it's simplicity.
Overall this is a good moc, because it always surprise me that it can climb over obstacles so big and also it gave another perspective of how make off roaders. Instead of a big, heavy and powerful one, you can make a light, simple and less powerful one.
Another really useful advice, whenever you write in mocpages always make a copy or click save before refreshing.
