A short tutorial on curved walls and mixed cylinder curving.

About this creation

Lego comes in many shapes and sizes, but not often in round shapes. So when youre trying to add curves to your walls (or structures), you may tend to get stuck.

The simplest technique to adding curves, is by using 1x2 bricks, but rather than line them up in a straight line, bend them at the ends to achieve a slight curve. As seen below:

1x3 and 1x4 pieces can also be used, but they will yield different levels of curvature. The biggest problem with this technique is that it tends to stress the bricks and creates quite large curvatures. If youre looking for something sturdier and much smaller (but more part consuming), Erik Brok has come up with a technique called mixed cylinder curving.

In this technique you mix 1x2 (or 1x3 or 1x4) bricks or plates with round 1x1 bricks or plates. The result is a much smaller curvature, but a little choppier. To eliminate some of the choppiness, you can replace the 1x1 round bricks with regular 1x1 bricks. The result is a smoother wall, though not as round as with the 1x1 round bricks.
