Big Yella
This is my entry for the Lego Cities Vehicle Contest. It is based on a Kenworth W900 / Peterbilt 379 style truck.
About this creation
Here's my attempt at an American long-nose style truck. This is also my entry into the Lego Cities Vehicle Contest in the Lego Cities Group.
It is based on Lego set 3221. I've had this particular set a while now and I wasn't very pleased with the scale of it so I built my own, utilising some parts from the original set within it. I always thought the wheels on the original were way to small for such a large truck.
This truck is 7-wide and is my first 7-wide creation. I found it a bit of a challenge using this width but I am very pleased with the end result.
I hope this is a satisfactory scale for the Lego Cities Group. I find it works very well with the mini fig scale.
Anyway, here's "Big Yella" and I hope you enjoy it.

This is the tail lift for getting the deliveries on and off the truck. These 2 fellas both have bad backs from having to manually lift the boxes on and off the truck in it's previous form. This tail lift really makes their lives a whole lot easier.

Sliding side loading door for those hard to reach boxes. They rarely use this door as they like using the tail lift so much.

Tool store and work light. Careful of that 5th wheel, it's very greasy!

Alternative access to the sleeping/living compartment.

Quite a comfy area to live and sleep in. A nice king-size single bed, TV/DVD, fridge, and a handy night light. There are 2 big leather seats in the front to make driving this thing a pleasant experience.

AHA!!! So this is where it all began! The 7-stud wide vehicle. This is like an archaeological dig where you find the first wheel man ever made. What a great find!

Very nicely done! I've never seen the sliding door on the side before? Is it a fairly new piece?

Quoting Marin Stipkovic It's better looking than the original set all apart from the rear end of the trailer. ;)
I know exactly what you mean, I was never quite happy with it. If only Lego could produce a door 3 and a half studs wide it would have been a perfect fit. The tail lift does it's best to hide it.

Quoting cyberfrank 2010 2 things to make this absolutely perfect; have a car or original truck for comparision. show a pic of your hook up system,as it s seems quite revolutionary! as for your semi..,it s awesome! 7 wide? incredible,i m impressed! so much details, you rock! excellent work! i ll have to go back on the drawing table... again! thanks!
Hello Mate, Just to let you know I have done a comparison page which shows this truck against a 5 wide and a 4 wide car. The hook up system is basically the same as the one I used on my District Line Train Transporter. The only difference being that the one used on here is 1 stud less in width. Here's a link to it: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/209803

Quoting Steffen Kasteleiner Hey Andrew, this is an awesome truck! And you made it 7-wide, perfect! What´s especially awesome are the details you added to the cowling/ "nose section": the dark-grey things in the front part and those wheel pieces - those last things have exactly the right size in relation to the real ones. What are they, BTW? - I always thought they should be containers for cooling liquid or something... The cab is really nice, too. Good job on this one! Steffen
Hi Steffen, I'm very glad you like my first attempt at a 7-wide. I think you are right about the containers for cooling liquid. I know they definitely contain an air filter but I don't know what else they contain. Maybe an American trucker could shed some light on the mystery. Thanks for the comment Mate, I really appreciate it. Andy

Quoting Eric and Lawson B Andrew, this is really slick. It looks like the truck LEGO "should" have built. Better to-scale look and detail. Your use of the seats as fenders is truly a great technique. Regards, Eric.
Thank you Eric, you are too kind. The seat/fender technique is something I saw on trucks built by Mike Psiaki on Flickr and Steffen Kasteleiner on MOCpages. I have just put my take on it which is a bit different to theirs, but I really owe them the credit for having the idea in the first place.
