TP - MocOlympics - R1 - Jailhouse Rock
MocOlympics entry for round 1.
About this creation

MocOlympics homepage

Well now, it seems the technical difficulties some of us were experiencing across the 'Pages has been resolved. You know what that means? Upload time! So, without further ado, I present my (late) MocOlympics entry for Round 1, 2010.

Being proverbially stumped for the first few precious days of round 1, I tossed around a handful of ideas, none of which seemed to please me. The ones that did, I did have the resources for at the time (including elements and time) Among them, I considered the final scene of "Blues Brothers", the original Elvis Presley music video of "Jailhouse Rock", and, for some reason Elvis in a boxing ring. Why in a boxing ring? That's the video I always think of when I think of the king of rock.

Finally, I settled on a slight variation of the theme. Recalling the fact that, in the old days of the South, a man with a sentence was forced to break up rocks (lord only knows why) in the warm countryside. Running with that, this is the final product. Enjoy (or cringe, if that is your preference).

Wow, I am getting such an "Oh Brother, where art Thou?" feeling.

Seriously, just watch the first five minutes of the movie, and you'll see what I'm talking about. Two photos in, already rambling. Not bad.

So anyway, here's a nice shot of the prisoners working on those rocks.

Side view.

Moving on, here's a shot from the guard's house. Nothing like relaxing in a cold wooden shed with no electricity after a hard day's work of standing and looking at people and occasionally hitting them with objects. What?

Is that? No... Really? So that's where Elvis went; back in time! Link to high-res version. Seriously, click it.

Side view from the other side. Didn't expect that, did ya?

Moving along, we have some bare foliage here. Trying to recreate the countryside without actually creating fields proved to be more difficult that I believed. Eventually, I settled on this simple technique.

And the set minus the players.

A view of the rocks worthy of being in an Eggplant MOC.

The back of the guard house backdrop.

A view of the first half of the players.

And finally, the poor, poor prisoners. I hope you enjoyed this viewing this MOC, as well as reading this bland commentary. Oh, and my photography skills. Good day to you, gentlemen.

Excellent! This has to be one of the ONLY (if not THE only) Lego Road Gangs in existence! I'm originally from the South, and there are plenty of these still around (but they make them wear orange in case they break free...hard to "blend" with an orange jumpsuit on!). Good luck in the competition!

Quoting Garth Danielson All that pick action is for making gravel. All gravel in the USA comes from prisons. They have a monopoly on small rocks. Nice group of guys and it does remind me of Oh Brother Where art though and also Cool Hand Luke. A little more series than Oh Brother. Good luck. see ya. garth
Thanks for clearing that up for me Garth, it was really starting to bug me.
