Now on to the sets!

The first set is the smallish ten or twelve dollar battle pack. Includes a Blacktron 3 attack speeder, a communications post, and four minifigures.

The next set is one of those sets that has a better vehicle than the battle pack but only one minifigure and costs around 12-14 dollars. Inspired by one of our honorable judes, Yuri Fassio, the Blacktron 3 Thinship fighter.

Now on to an even larger set, one of the $25 or $30 sets: the Blacktron 3 assault rover. Includes 2 minifigures.

One of my favorite parts of this is that I connected the rear axle to the turret, making the turret spin as the vehicle rolls. I thought it was pretty retro, all it was missing was an irritating whirring sound to go with it. ;)

Demonstration:

The largest set of my "series", the Blacktron 3 communications base. Includes 2 vehicles, six minifigures, and lots and lots of antennae. Price estimated at $50 to $70.

Vehicle #1, the scout bike.

Vehicle #2, communications relay rover.

Relay rover is equipped with a basic suspension!

Turn the knob...

...and watch the elevator rise!

A Space Police officer has infiltrated your base!

Release the trapdoor to take care of that nosy officer!

Giant communications dish really rotates!

The two vehicles.

There you have it, my attempt at retro space. As the topic said, these builds were an attempt to create models that LEGO would actually sell, ranging in size and (estimated) price. The most difficult aspect of this style of building is making the build look like an old, basic set, while avoiding making it completely suck. My hat goes off to all those who can successfully build retro MOCs!

Good job on the large vehicle, the base is very well done also. But try to make the background a little more solid, possibly even photoshop it or somthing.

Quoting Mark Kelso An excellent entry, Cody. You didn't make this one easy. I'm giving my vote to Parrington...but BARELY. Your build quality was neck and neck, and you both got the theme to your category perfectly. It came down to color choices (I personally preferred the blues), and while not a big issue, I felt Parrinton's presentation (i.e. pics) were just a bit better. Well played, nevertheless!
I had a feeling this would happen, I'm just happy that I built in a classic category almost as well as Parrington, that alone is something to be proud of. :)

These are outstanding models. You did a fantastic job. Photographing black is VERY hard (Dr. Jones says it's best to do it against a black background). You should be very proud of this entry.

Well Cody this is an excellent entry. Parrington is really great at building space themed vehicles, but I think you stepped up to the challenge and squared off strongly. You should be very proud of your entry! Good luck with the judges!

My two favorite vehicles were the thinship (with it's awesome design) and the assault rover (with it's double pilots and awesome guns) overall, fantastic job!

Ahhh, Blacktron-y goodness. How I'd have loved to get this category. But you and Parrington have both produced great builds - too close to call which will get the deciding vote. For me, yours gives me more of a Blacktron feel, so good luck!

This was really hard for me as I love both builds, and I prefer your color patterns, but my vote is for Parrinton as I feel his designs went a step above. Now it is up to Mark. Good luck!

I'm having difficulties in judging this, so I'll organize my thoughts. Hopefully, trying to explain you guys might help me make a decision. Cody, your MOCs could actually be sets on a new BT3 line, you went all the way to make them have the "vibe" an official set give off. Simplicity and playability are the keywords. The battle pack and the rover are the highlights of your entry, and your our BT3 fig design is spot-on. Oh, and you have posted a "traditional" space scooter too! Yet the thinship's thruster might have used some more work, and the base needed some bigger panels to give a perfect "bigaxe base set" feeling. Also, it's a bit too close to the "original" BT theme. At the end of the day, Parrington DID build better than you, but as an entry, I really like yours better. You have my vote.

Amazing work mate! I like every thing about this MOC, but my favorite has to be the vehicles you built all around, keep it up.

You have created a classic theme with your vehicles and base. Even though I have never owned any of the Blacktron sets, I get the feeling this is pretty close to what they may looked like. This is going to be a tough call for the judges. If it were up to me I'd let both go on to R3!

Wow, this face-off is quite even IMHO! I love the land vehicles and the fact that you made them is various sizes to cover different prices. The color scheme is quite good, and I love all the little play features you put in your different sets. Like Crimso, I think I wouldn't feel comfortable judging that contest. Good luck!

Thanks Crimso! Now that I'm looking at both Parrington and my entries, the two of us would have been a great team in designing a Blacktron 3 line together, him with his great spacecraft and me with a greater interest in land vehicles. Too bad the MOC Olympics wasn't a team contest! :D

Argh ! I wouldn't be the judges ! The two entries are really good, and I could harldy tell which one deserves the win. Parrington has a new color scheme, very well designed and funny models... Your MOCs are maybe a little more original though (especially the tribute to Yuri) and the idea for the turret of the vehicle is great... Honestly, no idea who's the best, congrats to you and Parrington for those nice Blacktron 3 !

Hey dude, I love what you have done here with your reasonably priced range of sets. I have completely blown any budgetary concerns it seems, oops! These really do look like those old space sets, I liked that rover heaps. Well, I think this will be a close one dude...
