1/10 1933 Alfa Romeo P3 Monoposto 'Tipo B'
1/10 1933 Alfa Romeo P3 Monoposto 'Tipo B' Yes, it has a ferrari badge. No, it's not a ferrari. Stop being annoying, "enzo kids". I know more about cars than you.
About this creation
Hi,

I planned to finish my share of Lego this holiday with my massive 30's roadster (which I'm grateful for all the nice feedback by the way), and mentioned something about already having my next car planned for when I next come home, possible christmas.

Then two things happened. First, I found out that I'm going back a week or two later than expected (yay!) and second that I had a whole day home alone and nobody had anything they wanted done while they were out.

So, I thought why not make the car now. Gets it out of my system and you guys don't need to wait another few months to see it :)

It's 1/10 scale, same as my Bugatti Type 46, but is slightly smaller. Also it was fairly quick to build, being a thin one-seater car with no mudguards/wings - the baseplate I used for this was pathetically small compared to the one I constructed for the big white roadster.

So another nice old car, but different - different shape, and different to build. What would it be? Bugatti? Bentley? Ferrari? Well all the 10 year old 'enzo kids' might think I should have done a ferrari but I actually know about cars - Ferrari didn't make cars back then. Instead Mr. Ferrari headed Alfa Romeo's racing division - he only moved on to building his own cars later.

The choice of car happened after I watched the 2003 film 'Ferrari' where he unveils the first racing car he would use for the Alfa team - the P3 Monoposto (or Tipo B). It's very similar looking to the more known 8C (yes kids, there was an 8C long before that new one... not that I have anything against the new one, which is still a very good looking car), yet I chose this one as it looked awesome in the film.

Oh, just another little thing to rant about - all the veyron kids probbaly think all the old racing cars look exactly the same. Well, I guess they might to somebody who doesn't know them too well - but look at modern cars. In europe at least, every family hatchback looks exactly the same. Hell, the peugeot 106, citroen c1 and toyota aygo *are* the same car - how pathetic, no imagination whatsoever !

Anyway back to the lego model. Just as the Bentley was made just because I'd managed to make the lights to scale, and the big white car was made just cuz I'd made a cool looking big radiator grille, I made this car just because I had the perfect windscreen for it. Not much of a start, but as usual, it all came together okay in the end.

My little brother helped too, and together we got the car built in just 3 days. That's 3 days of a bit of lego-building and lots of not-lego, by the way.

When I'd gotten half-way through the car, my little brother (which I guess must be the builder of the biggest microcars - if that's not an oxymoron - here on MOCpages) decided to help too and made the radiator grille, seats and half of the straight-eight engine.

I know, the photos aren't quite up to the same quality as the last three cars, I guess there just wasn't enough light in the room when I took them - and fiddling with brightness/contrast even more just made them unviewable. Hey, if you think of it, they sort of look old - which is quite fitting.

Things to notice:
- cool exhaust
- boat-tailed rear
- working old-style steering as was common on racing cars of the time

Things to maybe not pay so much attention to (why on earth am I pointing these out???)
- my pathetic attempt at a ferrari badge on the side...
- the fact that there's no space for the driver's legs... sorry, just had to be built like that to get the steering working.

Anyway, enjoy - and this time it really is the last model for a while - and the last car for even longer (until the next time I find a huge load of lego cheap at a flea market basically) - cars take lots of parts and it's annoying having to keep buying wheels. Besides, it seems like I've done so many cars lately - during my next lego building spree I'll be coming back to my neglected but still loved space models...

- Dan

And, as requested, a photo next to my Bugatti... sorry for the boring angle, I'd have done a sort of 3/4 view, with the two cars symmetrically facing away from each other - except that the only way which I could finish this model before leaving for uni was to use the wheels from my Bugatti instead of ordering 4 new ones; something I will get round to doing next time I'm over...

- Dan

Great to see an old racer built so nicely : ) Pluspoints are that excellent straight-eight, clean body work and steering, but it's compromised by the cabin with that grey wall where drivers legs should be. 8/10, not perfect but a nice MOC overall. P.s, you could try an old knight's sheild for the badge on the side?

Quoting De Tomaso Pantera That's a beauty! Love these old cars too. You are quite a builder, your descriptions are funny too! You really don't like 12 year olds do you lol! Your Bugatti is magnificent too. Really nice to see some original creations (not Ferrari or Lambo). Keep up the great work!
Thank you :) I'm still at university right now, but should be back home and lego-ing in just over a month - I do have some stuff planned... I don't hate 12 year olds lol... I just can't help thinking that many people grow up - not njust 12 years old, but people nearer my age (20) as well - only knowing newer cars, believing all the adverts, and automatically thinking that old cars are rubbish. I've grown up around older cars, and though I like some newer ones too, I am familiar with a wide variety of cars, from all ages, and many of the older ones have their charms. By building them i'm (hopefully) opening some people up to cars they never even knew about. - Dan

Quoting Mortalswordsman . This is great. I love the overall shape and the exhausts. I am getting into these older cars and want to make something similar, all i need is two more of these wheels. Ebay here i come :)
Thanks :) Yeah, it is awkward finding wheels for old style cars... there are some OK ones in smaller sizes, but for this scale... this is pretty much it. There are some similar, grey, slightly new bigger motorcycle wheels but they cost a fortune. With a bit of creativity you can change the look of these (ref. my Bugatti Type 46). Have a look on ebay, but here are a couple of other ideas... - Bricklink = number one site to buy lego from. not always cheap (but in some cases, yes), but every part is there and generally people don't mess you around as much as they do on ebay. Also... I've noticed that buying individual parts or sets of wheels can be quite expensive - you *might* (haven't checked) be better of looking for an old second hand set, in which the wheels you want are there. There's a chance it works out more sensible money-wise, and you get the other parts too. - Dan

Haha I'm not going too strong on them; I had to borrow them off the Bugatti for this. I have see the new motorcyle wheels (the grey ones, you mean?) , they're really cool... but very expensive - I prefer to buy these for the price difference. ~Dan

Exact, mais je pense que c'est surtout au nom des fameuses "economies d'echelle" que ces 3 modéles ont la méme carrosserie... Quoting Sven Bode & Jens Matuschek Grande, grande, grandissima!I think Enzo would have been proud of this for sure...hm, still have to watch that movie. I'd really like to see some pics of your Bugatti next to this - and smell the burnt petrol of times long ago..Ciao, Jens
There you go; added a photo of both next to each other... wow, they do look so different in size - yet the Bugatti isn't a big car, and they are the same scale... well ... strictly speaking the Alfa is "1/10.5" scale, but that just sounds silly...
Quoting Joe P. "Honey, where's the van?" "The van? We bought a van?" "Yes, we did but I can't find it!" "Oh, I sent it to the junkyard and got paid just about 20,000, enough to buy this Alfa Romeo Classic! Do you like it?" "But how will we get the kids to school?" "They can walk. It's only 5 miles away!" Haha nice work!
Thanks :) I'm not sure what a real one's worth but I doubt anybody would part with one for a $20,000 van lol.... I doubt you could even build a replica with that... such a shame - there are plenty of nice cars around, they're just so expensive...

Excellent! A really evocative model with lovely details.. The boattail rear is beautifully done. Unfortunately, you're right about your Ferrari badge but I guess you were short of the right small plates.
