Moc Olympics R3 - Group 1B - Stuart Lucas vs Dacheronar Grahen
Title: the Smorgasfjord, c. 1200 A.D.
About this creation
This is an entry in the MOC Olympics. Category: "Slartibartfast" Fjords!

My opponent is Bionicle wizard Dacheronar Grahen, see his creations here.
It's not a requirement to put in a link to the MOC Olympics homepage, but it does help with navigation!

Since this category is mainly about the landscape, I'll keep the commentary minimal and let you look at the pictures.

Wait a minute! What's that floating behind that ridge? Don't try and look at it directly - look at it out of the corner of your eye...

There. Now I've pointed it out to you, you can see it. It was concealed by a Somebody Else's Problem Field.

Unless I miss my guess, it's some Magrathean loss adjusters - the Earth's 4 billion year warranty is about to run out, and they're here to check that everything is tickety-boo.

There's more strangeness going on deep within the rocks... these are Waldovian Triplods. Let's look them up in the Hitch-hikers' Guide to the Galaxy:

The three-legged, bug-eyed Triplods from the Waldovan system (popularly known as 'Wallys') are considered one of the silliest looking races in the galaxy, so silly that in their early history even they themselves couldn't look at each other without collapsing with laughter. In order for their culture to progress they had to develop enormous self-control to contain their mirth. When they release it, after long periods of solemnity, they frequently laugh helplessly for weeks on end.

Perhaps because of this the long-lived Waldovians have earned a reputation for playing extroardinarily drawn-out practical jokes, just so they can experience new heights of humourous ecstasy at the end of them. This is an old favourite - planting dinosaur fossils on a planet where dinosaurs never existed, then watching for the next 1000 years as scientists try to explain why they all died out!

A few words of explanation...

Well I entered the MOC Olympics to encourage me to try new things and it's certainly worked out that way so far. I'm not big on scenery; actually I don't possess a single baseplate!
My main idea with this MOC was to play a bit with forced perspective - making things smaller the further they are away, to make the MOC look deeper than it actually is. I think it sort of works; that's why all the views are taken from the front, otherwise the perspective is reversed and it all looks a bit silly!

A view from a steeper angle to feature the Norse hamlet, and longboat off to loot and pillage in sunnier climes. They still build wooden houses with turf on the roof in the fjords, you know. Credit to Nicks' Bricks excellent entry in round 2 for inspiring the nano-scale boat!

The cave without its alien interlopers, built in the space behind one of the walls of the fjord.

And a look at the underside of the MOC, just for the sake of completeness...

A closer look at the Waldovians. Another inspiration credit for these: Ribbits M with all his micro mechs and creatures!

In spite of their nickname, the Wallys are proud enough to wear their identity on the backs of their shirts. Good for them!

And finally, thanks to the late Douglas Adams for inspiring the category and the MOC!

Haha, excellent work! Especially considering you're a sci-fi builder, this is truly wonderful. The angled mountains really add a very natural feel, and the miniscale ship is great!

Great build sir! The landscape is superb and the micro ship/boat is awesome too! The Waldovians cracked me up as well, I think I'm going to be laughing uncontrollably for the next century or so.

I've tried to make convincing landscapes at this scale but nobody's seen them cause they were trashed due to horribleness. This is actually beautiful to look at, really stunning work!

Stuart, that's cracking! The first photo sold me on this, just a lovely bit of micro-landscaping. The longboat, huts, and all the hidden alien fun are just icing on a very tasty bit of work. Good luck!

I was recently contemplating reading all of THHGTTG's books again. This is a great scene. Lovely microscale landscape! I've been to a couple of Norwegian fjords and I have to say that you've captured the landscape beautifully. The snow and the waterfall work really well. The only thing I can think of is that compared to the ship and houses, the fjord walls should be much, much higher (about 20 to 50 times), but that would be nitpicking ;)

Oh my....this is spectacular!!!! Not sure what the aliens have to do with the scene, other than some cute extras. Well I shouldn't say that, I do understand that Fjord is a play on Adams' character and such....just wasn't sure why you didn't include Slartibartfast. LMAO
