About this creation
The American force was the largest yet assembled for any single operation in the Pacific the total number of troops was 35,000. They faced off against the Japanese army of 3,000 troops and 1,000 Japanese and 1,200 Korean laborers.
The Japanese were highly entrenched with pillboxes, artillery guns, and airfield, coastal defense guns, concrete bunkers, and 14 Type 95 tanks were part of the Japanese fortifications.
The Battle lasted four days and of the 5,200 Japanese troops only 17 Japanese and 129 Koreans were captured. The American losses were 1,000 killed along with the USS Liscome Bay with 687 sailors, a further 2,296 were wounded.
The Japanese commander once boasted "it would take one million men one hundred years" to conquer Tarawa" but the island fell in only 4 days with 35,000 men.
