Space Police III HSP Prototype
About this creation

Design & Build

I grew up with Classic Space, Blacktron I and II, and of course Space Police I and II; so I was excited when Space Police III came out, (though less excited about the pseudo-Blacktron villains). After I acquired the Raid VPR set, I decided to build my own SPIII ship. I wanted to go with something sleek and smooth; something all about speed. I started sketching out ideas and I came up with this ship, the Hyperspace Pursuit Prototype.

The overall look of the craft is clean with minimal studs and greebles. The most stud-laden part is the wings. I decided to go this route because I wanted thin wings that would visually balance the front and provide stability to the rear. The few greebles that are present are along the dark grey portion on the ship's upper surface. Here there is venting and shield-generating components. This area leads into the windscreen which allows the lines to flow forward, onto the sides, and into the engines. The engines, and their placement, I believe, are the ship's most striking feature. I designed them so that they tuck-up under the main structure with the front quarters leading into them. The engines are substantial for a ship of this size. Their function is to generate massive power, and subsequently speed. They also hold the stabilizing fins for better atmospheric maneuverability. Although the engines are large, they were designed be an integral component of the ship's design, not simply there as a necessity or an afterthought.

The next unique feature of the ship is its lack of moveable landing gear. The ship simply lands on pads located under the cockpit and engines. I thought of using the engines this way because I'm very fascinated by racecar engineering and the creative solutions the engineers come up with. One of these is there use of the engine as a stressed unit. What this means is that the engine itself is an integral component of the chassis where it adds strength and holds components, such as suspension mounts. This layout makes for a more compact and lighter craft that also makes it easy for entry and exit, due to its low side height.

The cockpit itself is all business. There are information screens and the option of full manual control so that the pilot is always in command.

You'll notice that there are only two police lights and no weapons. This is intentional as I built this as if it were a prototype. The main concern for the SPD is to test the concept so that they may proceed with a production model that would include all the necessary hardware for a pursuit and capture. And of course, when the Space Police need a new ship tested and developed, they go the veterans, Space Police I!

It was a fun ship to build and I hope you enjoy it!

And now for some Photoshop fun!

Very nice shape, quite aggressive. I understood your goal but still I would have added a few greebles on the wings. Great ship anyway !
