Proto
continuing the 25th century mech them
About this creation
ok, this one needs some explanation (especially since I've added it to a mech group...).

AS per the other designs in the 25th century mech theme, proto is a micro mech inspired by the work of designers such as zizzy. under this theme mankind has populated the stars and lawlessness has broken out in the spaces between colonies, resulting in Earth creating a corp of mecha warriors to defend trade routes and police space.

Into this mix of mecha cops and mecha pirates, I've started to introduce variations on the theme. First was The Ves, an energy based mecha like war bot representing an ancient race of aliens who are attempting to retake our galaxy.

Proto - As the name suggests is the prototype for a new style of mech frame. In an attempt to distance myself from other similar designs I've ditched the zizzy inspired frame and come up with something a little more basic. onto this frame I intend to dress and entirely new generation of mechs, representing the development of Earth and its colonies in the aftermath of The Ves attacks.

As I've attempted to show with the pictures below, Proto is extremely poseable for his size, standing less than 8 bricks tall from head to foot. This version (due to the positioning of the shoulders) does not feature a "neck" joint and can only look forward and down, other units in this theme have no neck at all, so this is only a minor step backwards.

Shoulders have both upward and rotating movement, biceps can swivel, there is an elbow and a wrist turn. The waist can rotate, but unlike many of the Infernal Machine designs it cannot bend at the waist.

Thighs can swivel as can the ankles, there is a knee joint and the hips can swing outwards as well as forward and back.

Pictured are two guns and two swords, the handles of each are actually Ventrisīs light sabre handles.

How is this a mecha?

Like all my mecha in this series the chest area is actually a cockpit (similar to gundam), the difference here is that the cockpit is in fact the head, (similar to the Zoids). Since it is a "manned" robot it technically qualifies as mecha, though since the scale is too small to show a pilot, this is debatable.

Developments and improvements.

Anyone who has seen my Lego.com 3d Creator gallery will note that three versions of Proto have already been developed, two of which are shown here.

version 1. much leaner frame with shoulders much closer to the head. Looks better but limited posing.

version 2. chunky hips. The original has a 2x1 brick with a hole to form the hip joint attached by a single stud to a 1x1 hinge piece. Since this looked bulky and lacked greebles I switched it fo0r a 1x1 brick with a hole and decorated it with a brick with arch, but this stuck out too far and with the now wider body limited posing of the legs. This version is pictured in the thumbnail.

version 3. wider body, thinner thighs. To maximise posing the body was widened and the single front 2x2 sport was replaced by two on the shoulders. the thigh was redesigned to eliminate the bulk. This version can be seen in the dual wielding laser sword pic.

improvements - possible version 2.

short list obviously is to give it less of a hunchback shape, i'd very much like to move the head onto the shoulders not the chest. The shoulders need more greebles and bulking up, as does the chest, hopefully to demonstrate a cockpit here rather than inside the head. The feet also need some work, I'd like them to have the capability to pose more, perhaps adding toes.

Weapons obviously need working on, and maybe some accessories, a flight / space pack or detachable battle armour.

Remember this is a prototype, both for the new frame and for the concept, so please bear that in mind when commenting and/or rating.
