Freelancer Cassidy Rain comes from the planet Thanatos - seen here - which is a world battered by global storms and fierce rain almost without end. The few colonists here are tough and independent. Thanatos is in a star system a few light years from Haven.
About this creation
Cassidy Rain, a Freelancer by trade, raises a glass of celebration as she has just acquired a crate of pearlenium - this crate is worth about $500,000 standard credits on most worlds. Behind her is a recently acquired Star Hawk light fighter, which she has named the "Fell Hammer".
Arthur C. Lagos invested his moderate family fortune in starting up a large manufacturing business. Public interplanetary transportation was quite good in the Cargonian Empire, but there was still a niche for private space transportation, or private transportation with class and style. He created a few designs, mostly “space yachts”, and a few family transports, all of which saw some limited success. Some years later, he decided to branch out into military designs for the Imperial forces, which were a considerable economic driving factor in the empire.
His first design was the rather simple Star Hawk light fighter. The fighter was designed for patrol duty and support of other vessels. Its largest pros were the fact that it was extremely simple in both design and maintenance, and it was well designed to be carried aboard larger ships - thus even a medium capital ship could carry one or two for support in operations away from home base. However, the fighter had several ‘cons’ that prevented the fighter from seeing much success, and from being acquired by the Empire in large numbers. The first negative was how lightly armed the fighter was - it sported two light, rapid fire lasers, and had only four hard points for light ordinance. The second negative was its overall lack of luster in speed, maneuverability, and flight. The fighter met military standards, but did not out perform any current designs used by the empire - which were the Longbow and Star Wing.
The first production run of the Star Hawk light fighter was rather small. However, while the empire found limited use for the fighter with the outposts, the underground community of Freelancers operating in Cargonian space quickly fell in love with the ship. The occupation of being a Freelancer was extremely dangerous, but this was the first time many Freelancers in the empire could access even a moderately armed vessel. The fighter did not have intended cargo space, but behind the pilot seat was a small space originally intended for pilot comfort during long space flights. Freelancers turned that comfort space into a cargo space. And very quickly the Freelancers who used the Star Hawk began to make other changes, including more powerful engine pods.
When Emperor Carga III, decided to launch a pre-emptive invasion into the Human Federation, the Empire began bolstering its military strength. A small second production run of Star Hawks was ordered. There was not much of a niche in military operations for the craft, but it was determined that a small number would work well as support vessels on ships assigned scouting missions. Thus, a small number were sent along with the half-formed 7th Legion to the small moon of Nagulya, on the edge of known space. Almost two years later, General Barrington, commander of the 7th Legion, arrived in orbit of the planet Haven, aboard his warship, Hammer Strike.
His purpose was to demand the surrender of the planet Haven - another border colony world of the Federation. The planet had spent the last month organizing a local militia, and had yet to acquire any sort of ships or defenses that could fight against a single Cargonian war ship. However, there were not many colonists on Haven - a far flung and forgotten rural agricultural colony - who were loyal to the Federation. And, many colonists on Haven felt abandoned by the Federation in their call for help, for defenses against the invaders. One person, Cassidy Rain, a Freelancer in the border worlds area, had many personal reasons to not like the Federation, and she encouraged her friends and contacts on Haven to side with the Cargonians. After two weeks of discussion, the governor of Haven and his staff officially capitulated, and vowed allegiance, to the Cargonian Empire, offering also the service of its newly formed and still being armed militia.
As a gift to Cassidy Rain for her influence, General Barrington gifted a Star Hawk light fighter to Cassidy Rain, feeling that as a Freelancer she might appreciate the same qualities in such a ship that had made it so popular with Freelancers in Cargonian space. Cassidy Rain named her little vessel, Fell Hammer, in reference to Barrington’s own ship, and to the incident in which she acquired the fighter.
During the years of the war, the Star Hawks would see limited use - mostly due to their limited numbers - in support roles in the “fringe” operations of the war. Many would fall into civilian hands in the border worlds, and would later inspire the “blood gnat” class ship.
