The Airbus Beluga was developed to carry airplane segments between the Airbus factories. At first, they used a few Super Guppies, but segments of the A330/A340 were still to big for their. Because of this (and the fact, that the Guppies are Boeing products, which leads to the jibe "every Airbus is delivered on the wings of a Boeing"), Airbus replaced their with the "Beluga". It was not the official name at first (it was just called "the supertransporter") but it became so popular, that it is now official.
