5 + R manual gearbox with gearstick
Ever since the 8880 came along with the stickshift plate, 4 speed manual transmissions could be made compact and realistic. The 8448 introduced changeover plates to allow the creation of manual transmissions with more gears. But there is a problem. The gearstick moves frontwards and backwards around the axle but for sideways movement it has to be slid down the axle which isnt realistic and doesnt work fluently. My creation solves exactly that problem(here the gearstick leans left, right, forward and backwards) and another one. In most lego 5+R manual gearboxes the reverse gear is actually faster than the fifth gear. To solve that the reverse is where you usually find the first and that is quite realistic as such gearboxes do exist(eg. mercedes 190 2.5 16v cosworth has one - the 5-speed Getrag dogleg gearbox). In one of the images you can the shift pattern, the gear ratios and the all of the gear combinations for each gear - number of teeth:number of teeth. I hope you like my creation and feel free to comment and make sudgestions!!!

Too big to fit in any car, however it's a great model. Some time ago I've built a very compact 6 position gearstick, I will build it again to let you see how it's made, so you could use it in your models :)

Quoting Loaba Lite That's a great tranny, man. Whatever you put it on is gonna have to be huge, that this is, what, 14-studs high?
Actually, its "only" 12 studs high but still way too big for any vehicle. I built it for experimental and demonstrational purposes. I am really happy that you like it.Btw I checked out your modified sonic boom and i must say i quite like the elegance of it.

Quoting Dirk Wolfert Dude, that is awesome, are you going to make building instruction for it??
I am glad you like it and I just finished the instructions which are now available.Oh and one more thing, when assembling the middle axle with the driving on it(the input axle) make sure that you fine-position it in a way that the two 16 tooth clutch gears on it stay always meshed - by positioning the bush accurately(otherways you lose the reverse)
