When the Dust Settled...
This goes out to all those lost in the earthquake of Feb 22nd.
About this creation

We have suffered yet another earthquake. This one more devastating than the magnitude 7.1 that hit my city in September of last year.

This is the remains of my chimney...

... and the remains of the wall alongside my driveway.

But I was one of the lucky ones...

... others were not so lucky. They have lost everything.

Not only buildings and houses have been damaged, but the roads too.

This is all that is left of the beautiful church on the corner of my street.

The front of the church was broken in the first quake nearly 6 months ago... ironically it is now the only thing left standing.

I am at a loss as to how to cope with this devastation... this is only my street. The rest of the city, in particular the Central Business District has been hit much much worse and hundreds of search and rescue teams from New Zealand and all over the world are still trying to recover those trapped in the rubble in the centre of town.

"Excuse me Miss."

"Who are you?!"

"My name is Derrik, I come from a tiny planet far, far away."

"Is this your fault?! Did you destroy my city with your ray gun?"

"No, no, I swear to you I come in peace. I was flying nearby your planet when I heard of this disaster. I landed to help you out. My ray gun is a gun that heals what is broken. But I am so tiny here in your world, my gun just doesn't work on such a huge scale."

"I can't fix this crack in the footpath..."

"I can't even mend the tiny crack in the wall. I'm sorry I cannot help you."

"I'm sorry too Derrik. Don't be upset, come home with me."

"My neighbours and I are making the most of things. We have set up temporary home in the garage. You are welcome to stay with us."

"Hi Derrik!"

"We have a radio to keep us informed,"

"we have pooled together our food and resources."

"And we have built a stove out of the broken bricks from our chimneys. We have to stay together through this difficult time."

We still have no electricity here. Our water came back on last night, so things are looking up. I won't mention the death toll because it is too depressing, except to say my thoughts are with all the families of those killed and those who are still missing.

Here are some more images of the quake.

Yeah that would be cool. It will be ages yet before anything is rebuilt, still demolishing stuff. I have my own special build planned for this though, its just finding the time to start it.

Good job. After the cataclysm, you took action which was not only constructive and communicative, but creative as well. Your approach to the whole situation, your decision to communicate the facts of the tragedy to all of us, in an unambiguous and objective manner, (through Lego no less) demonstrates a level head, a keen intellect, great compassion, and a strong spirit. I guess Kats really do always land on their feet. Attack!

Yeah, that's good to hear. She has to get the rest of her shots in a few weeks, until then she's locked up in the playroom. She actually has a tapeworm (My mom told me when she got back from the vets), nothing too serious. She has some meds for it. Right now she's hiding behind the bookcase, she'll get used to it in a few days. I hope the best for you, your friends and your family.

Quoting Matthew Novosad I'm so glad to hear you're O.K! It must have been devastating, and to think that you were extremely lucky, compared to others on your street. I have some news that may cheer you up though, the kitten has finally gone to the vets! She is doing well, finally out of the garage, nice and warm in the house. She's starting to grow up so fast! She's already caught to animals. Hope that warms your heart a little :).
Thanks Matthew, that's great news! You have quite a little animal shelter going on there don't you! Toby and Sue fared well with the earthquake, they got spooked but have come back to normal now. Last night we had some pretty huge aftershocks and Toby just raised his head slightly, waited till they were done, then went back to sleep! All the best Matt :)

Hi everybody. Wow! What an amazing response! Thank you everyone for your kind and supportive words, prayers and support. The electricity has returned to my house finally, along with the official seal of safety pinned to my front door, so I can now return to my familiar surroundings, move out of the garage and charge up my laptop in the comfort of my own home. Tomorrow when my hot water cylinder heats up I will be able to have a shower... a luxury most take for granted, but something myself and many of Christchurch citizens have not had in a week. I am thankful that I have that ability as so many have lost their homes. To know that there is so much international and national support touches me and the residents of Christchurch so much. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart and feel truly blessed to know you all. New Zealand is very small and has a geographical isolation that sometimes makes us feel somewhat insignificant in the big wide world, but through sites such as this we realise that we have so many friends out there who would drop anything to help us out when we are in need. Thanks to all the foreign help that has been sent to our small but beautiful city. With the support of the greater world we can rebuild and begin to recover. I am truly touched by all the support and overwhelmed by the amount of good will there is still left in the world. When everything around me seems so lost and forgotten, to look at these comments gives me the strength to go on. ~Leda

When I heard about the earthquake, Im like, "I know people from Mocpages there! I hope they are OK! It made me feel really bad to hear that there was also some casualities, all those people, pets, livelyhoods, churches, relatives, and who knows what else. I am really glad you are ok, but sometimes legos just needs to take the backseat, so it is suprising that you are able to go on mocpages with all your grief. But then again, some vent their feelings through legos. I am going to pray for you. Is there any friends and/or family that I can pray for? If so, let me know. If you are saved by Jesus Christ, the son of God, you really dont have a reason to be scared during a time like this because you know that you are going to a better place. And all of those people who died, dont be sad, it was just their time. I pray for you, Master N.

So often Lego emulates life. It's a shame under such circumstances that life can't emulate Lego - we could simply put the bricks back into place, and take the fallen to stand them upright again. I'm so sorry to hear about this tragedy, Leda, and my heart goes out to all who've lost their property, or worse, their loved ones. I was sorting LEGO when I found out about the quakes. I kept refreshing the news page to see if there was any new updates every few minutes. My heart sank when I first heard there were casualties. I asked Bones to skype you so we could rest a little bit easy, and Tom was frantically trying to e-mail you....LMAO Needless to say, you updating Bones in such a fast manner was unexpected. I can't even tell ya how relieved I was to hear you were fine....I slept well that night! As battered and bruised as your city is, it will move on. It will definitely take some time, but all will be rebuilt. My thoughts are with all of you out there who are trying to pick up the pieces and get back to the way things were. BTW, the last pic of the van with the writing on it is extremely touching. "I'm OK Thanx" It almost seems like you snapped that intentionally for our sake. Good to know girl.....good to know!

I have been praying for New Zealand ever since it started. Knowing you survived the conflict I now praise God for the gift of a truly fantastical AFOL. I will continue to pray for you and yours. God bless!

You know, disasters like this always seem closer to home when there is someone you know caught up in the midst. I'm really glad you're okay, I'd be devastated to hear that one of my favorite artists didn't make it. My prayers are with you and everyone there, Leda.

I feel no shame in sharing that I cried reading this post. However, I have full confidence in Derrik and his ray gun, because it is powered by your imagination and soul. He need not heal the sidewalks or the walls. Those will be taken care of in time. But if he helps heal you, it will be among the most worthwhile contributions LEGO could make.

I heard all about the quake of NZ... Hope you are okay. really touching story you told there, a few Brits died there as-well. I wish Derrik was real, maybe he could've helped. The church was sad... All that hard work building that beautiful building, just to be destroyed again. Best wishes...

It seems very wrong to like this creation, for it is an awful thing that happened, but I am very glad that you and your friends are safe. Good luck in the future and I hope that your city can get back to some semblance of normal. Best wishes.

Devastating, absolutly devastating. Being in Auckland, I am pretty scared that the fault line that runs over New Zealand might hit farther north... All the best from me.

I don't know what to say. Seeing it in the news is one thing - it's so distant. But seeing this from a friend, makes it all of a sudden more real. My hopes go out to you.

The Earthquake was Terrifying, even in Wellington, we could feel the ground shake. I hope all the best for you, and Christchurch, and I hope that more people are found alive in the remains of buildings, I truly can't bare the photos in our newspaper the last few days, Buildings can be re-made, but lives are forever. All the Best. -Zach.
