Shadow V
Black Pearl...
About this creation
It's not 'entirely' finished yet but I won't have time to do so in the nearby future, I'm posting this now because I will enter this ship in the Jolly Rodger Contest (II)

The Ultimate version will take much more time, the most obvious are rigging and sails but there are several other aspects that need improvement. Like the stern, which should be a bit longer, the forecastle lacks detail, anchors and cannons on the upper deck. overall I want to make it a more accessable ship; in its current state it's a pain to access the gun deck or the cabin;
I need to work on the masts as well and the brickbuilt hull definitely needs some work on the bow.
As you can read, a LOT of work...
I hope you enjoy this rather rough version for now and have patience for the final (which will have better pictures and video's btw )

Big pirate fans know the black pearl has 18 guns on the gun deck, implying 9 on each side, you can see only 8 guns here but if you look closely you'll notice the 9th gunport near the bow, I just forgot to place a cannon

I didn't build the whole ship, only the part above the waterline (what you see when the Pearl is on sailing on the sea)
this has consequences for the interior, there's no brig and hold because these are partially located under the waterline.
I'm gonna try fitting a brig in the bow...oh wait, that's where the galley has to be... in the rear then...but where should I stock the rum ?
oh well, the good thing is it HAS an interior, all I need to do is find a good way to show it off

the ceiling window from the cabin, you can actually see through it, I used a transparant panel, placed it horizontally and added the cheese slopes. The disadvantage is that when "up is down" the cheese slopes fall off :P

I'm very happy with how the cabin turned out, there's one problem I can't really solve though, there's no glass in the windows and I really can't think of a lego solution. do you realize how difficult it is to infuse a parallelogram in a build ?

Cool, I like the uneak shape of the cabin. Good brick built hull too. I especially like those lamps at the stern, very creative.

Quoting brad TheGible oh ok. i did read that the QAR was a modifyed black pearl. but yea i expected the pearl to be the same size, because i heard they were the same size in the film. wish i kept the megabloks verion to compare them myself. i thought indianman ships were a different class, could you give me a list of ship classes and types please?
I don't have a complete list and I don't think there is such thing as the meaning of ship classes changed over the year. But I do have this nice list that organizes ships according to the sailplan. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=23991 However you don't see names like "indiaman" or "frigate" in there, those ships are not only determined by a sailplan. The definition for an Indiaman for example is that it's built for transporting goods and people and having enough cannons to make a good defence. Also that it has been built in India (something about the type of wood used). Indiaman were often painted similar to warships and have also been used in wars. They have a wide hull and a decent speed. Either way, basically this is a galleon, the Flying Dutchman for example is inspired by a "Fluit" and that kind of ship is also basically a galleon.

Quoting brad TheGible I uh, take the last comment I left here back. I've seen pictures of the lego Black Pearl set, and it made my face go from a smile to a frown. The QAR had six cannon ports on each side, and the Black Pearl has three.I thought galleons were bigger than frigates.....
Well, Galleons came in different classes, the Pearl isn't the largest in its kind. Same with Frigates. But I do have to say that I think the QAR as seen in POTC is NOT a frigate. There's a lot of discussion about the definition of a "frigate". I consider a Frigate to be a warship built for speed with only one gun deck. http://www.ship-models.eu/Diana-fg3.jpg This is a typical frigate for me, as you can see, according to the scale this is quite big. In the movie the QAR has less gunports as the black pearl so it is indeed innacurate of TLC to give the QAR more cannons then the Pearl. To my opinion the Pearl and QAR are the same class of vessel, both Indiaman ships (type of galleon) which is actually obvious since the Pearl was modified into the QAR for making the 4th movie.

Quoting Jason Gemmill windows aren't THAT difficult. bowsprit is too short. WAY too much black. "custom hull": not so great. and how 'bout them sails? paper is so tacky, please don't. not trying to be "mean, rude, or insulting".....but...you'll see.
I'd like to see how you would make the windows then :P Costum hull in general is the only decent sollution for the black pearl but I do agree mine might not work very well

i think i may have a solution for your windows, perhaps you could put clear 1x2s on the inside so you could like line the walls in them to make it look like glass?

Quoting Maxime MaxSamAlex Best pirate ship I have ever seen, I especially like the use of not using the pirate ship brown base plates. The curve of the hull is nicely done, too.
Thanks, it's practically impossible getting the shape right using hull plates so I had no chose but to build a costum hull

Quoting swash buckler Well done- looks very good- few inaccuracies though but i think you just lacked good parts.... i'm interested in lego's official Black Pearl that comes out in august..... Silhouette looks nearly perfect but i think windows should have some kind of glass or lattice part.... anyway nice work
I'm actually hoping the official one would present a sollution for the difficult windows :p thanks

Awesome creation! Great music choice for the video too! ("Up is down" by Hans Zimmer right?) I love sound tracks...very well done! The ship is really accurate to the movie. Once you've added the sails this will be a total masterpiece. I'm excited to see the finished product!
