The ARC-170. Aggressive ReConnaissance fighter.
About this creation
One of my main building goals is to have at least one sizable creation from each of the six Star Wars movies (sizable = bigger then my cat). With the Winter '06/'07 competition at FBTB.net, I finally got inspired for a creation from Episode III.
This ARC-170 measures 100 studs across and took about a month and a half to build. This creation is unusual in that I'm very satisfied with it - the first version may just be the final version.

The wings can close, but they are not automated at all. Each one is manual.

The guns are heavy enough that they actually weigh down the wings just slightly. However, this is a desired effect! See below.

The nose took a lot of work. I finally settled on a stepped-plate look to it, instead of rounded pieces. A friend's version made the rounded-piece construct work really well, but my internal structure wouldn't permit it. :(

The engines were actually the first thing I made. I was inspired to create the rounded look when I spotted some 1x3 rounded-slopes in my collection, and just had to do it.

The scale of the ship was then based on my engine design. The front of the engine is 10 studs long, so I based the 100 stud width on a bit of fuzzy math. :)

While the front cockpit is rather cramped, the middle one is very roomy. It is also entirely 'sealed' - the 'trangular' windows on the side are made from one full window pane.

I originaly used a red Astromech head (2x2 dome) but went to this version based on some feedback. The detail is gone, but the scale is more correct.

Due to the angle of the body at that point, the rear guns don't really 'sync' with each other. One of the few things I'm slightly disappointed with.

Not a lot of reference material for the bottom section here. A bit of this is guesswork, but I think I got it fairly well.

Thanks to my roommate for holding this up. Without dropping it. :)

I spent a day on this - it deserves a picture of its own. :)

I have a few comparison pics of my model with pics of the actual 3D model. As you can see in this pic, the main wings actually tilt down just a bit. There are more pics in my Brickshelf gallery - you can see where I went for accuracy and where I fudged a bit. :)

Andy Rees told me to have a look on your MOC and he was right that's an excellent improvement to the official set and it do deserve a better rating than 4 |

A really like that one. The official Lego was quite good and it was a real challenge to revisit the concept and you did it right. Especially like the engine design. Hope to see your MOC rising up. |

Incredible, however the "nose" of the ship is a hair short, but that is DEFINITELY not enough to decrease from the over-all magnificance of this creation. |

This is the best ARC-170 I've ever seen - it looks just like the one from the film. I cannot stress this enough; it is a perfect representation of the vehicle. I can only wish I had your talent. |

Exellent work! It seems to be a well planned, well built, and well executed design. I cannot really see any problems worth mentioning (the only ones I could even notice would be the slight nose bluntness and the engines shape around the grebbles). In short, exellent work; keep it up! |
